There is no speed limit other than the top speed the vehicle can achieve; however you're not supposed to SWITCH into it above 55mph.... of course just because you can drive faster than that in 4wd doesn't mean you should in situations where 4wd is actually necessary ;)

Also - don't run 4wd on dry pavement; only in snowy or icy conditions, or severe rain (dirt is ok too)

An old friend of mine made me aware of the fact the Jeeps are 4 wheel drive and NO wheel stop :)

why shouldnt you drive with 4wheel high on dry pavement?

Obviously you wouldnt need to but, why?

thanks for info on 4wheel drive

On most suv's you should not exceed 50-55 mph that's why I was concerned about going over 50 mhp :D

4 wheel drive on dry road... the reason this is bad is because:
Well, as long as your going straight there is no problem, but as soon as you turn the wheel all 4 wheels are actually turning at different speeds. If you're in 4 wheel drive on the road when this happens, you put a lot of stress on U joints, drive shafts, and axles. Something has to slip and if all 4 wheels have good traction, something will break. For this same reason if you have air lockers, you need to be careful when you lock them. I broke a U joint once climbing a large rock obsticle (locked), when I came down off of the obsticle I had to cut the wheel hard. I was on asphault and the U joint and outer axle snapped like a twig.

Do we want to know what you were doing on an obstacle that required lockers and then came down on asphalt? Or is that case still under investigation?:D (Does make parking on Civics easier at the mall though...);)

what about putting it into 4 wheel drive. this can only be done while stopped right? I figure i have already asked a noob question in thei thread might as well ask another.

you can put it in while moving, in fact, it is even recommended that you be moving slowly to do so. You can be going normal speeds to shit iinto 4 high though.

For the top speed question, I look at it this way: If you really need 4wd, theres probably no need to be going above 25 or so anyway. Anywhere above that speed, your 4wd probably isnt helping much.

firstaidTJ... that's a good looking Jeep!!! Oh... that's mine:D

The story is we (North Jersey Jeep Club) built an obstacle out of these 6000lb blocks for a Jeep dealership here in NJ (in his parking lot). This is when they first brought out the Jeep Commander. The dealership wanted to attract potential customers, well... I don't have to tell you all, but nothing is as exciting as watching Jeeps in action (spoken like a true Jeep addict). As you can see in the picture, it was raining (this is the day we setup). These blocks were very slippery when wet, and on top of that we had small gravel thrown on top of it which made it even more slippery. What you don't see in the picture is the telephone pole at the end of the obstacle that required you to turn as you came down off of the blocks. That's the story!! Came off the blocks, turned, and snap... :eek: 1 U joint, and 1 Outer axle. :( End of story!
