Putting the shifter in first will keep your jeep from going into second gear..it's good for engine braking on hills and what not.
The shifter in second usually makes it start in second gear but some trannies will also give you first...depends on the vehicle. Starting in second lowers torque to the wheels making easier starts in snow/mud/rain especially on inclines...also engine brakes but at higher speeds than first gear.
