Good Evening! Long time listener, first time caller. Also, I'm an ignoramus, so please excuse me.

My issue is this: My 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport does not shift at 70mph, rpm stays at 3000. I drove my Jeep from CA to AL and it would shift down like normal. Now, it doesn't and it's extremely loud (besides the normal "jeep thing") and I'm not too sure it's good for it.

I have 31's, no lift, so I shouldn't need to regear, right?

32RH, if you smash the gas over 60 MPH and at 3000 RPM can you get it to downshift? Shifting issues wouldn't be uncommon on a 20 year old 32rh. Before a witch hunt though its always a good idea to check your fluid and determine whether or not it should be serviced.

The 32RH has to be warmed up and shifted into Neutral with the engine running so the ATF pump will run and give an accurate ATF level. The 32RH can't be checked in Park since it's transmission pump doesn't run in Park.

Your 2001's automatic transmission is a 3-speed, it doesn't have an Overdrive. It only shifts twice. 1st to 2nd and then 2nd to 3rd. That's it.

With 31" tires and the most common 3.73 axle, ratio, hitting 3000 rpms in 2nd gear (if it wasn't shifting into 3rd) would mean you'd only be at 48 mph. At 3,000 rpms in 3rd gear you'd be doing 74 mph.

This chart is from a calculator where I input your 31" tire size, your 32RH transmission ratios, and your 3.73 axle ratio.

This assumes your axles are are geared to 3.73.

The second photo shows where a tag is located on your axles. Take a look at yours to see if it says 3.73 or 3.07. Take a rag and flashlight with you so you can wipe the tag off to see what it says. Inside the red circle you'll see where it says 3.73. See what yours says. If it say 3.07 instead your transmission may not be shifting from 2nd to 3rd. If it says 3.73, your transmission is operating normally.

Yep, it sounds like your three-speed auto is in its third, final gear and it takes around 3000 RPMs to reach and exceed the 70mph area.

In contrast, even though it receives a lot of criticism for its really tall fourth, overdrive gear, the later four-speed auto has really tall legs for eating up the miles on high-speed roads. I have the four-speed auto, and at 70mph its loafing along at around 2000 RPMs with 31-inch tires and 3.73 differential ratio.

When I had smoother tires, I could get around 20mpg on long highway runs at 70mph and 22 at 55. Now that I have mud grips, I've lost a few. But it sure pulls in the mud good!

Probably a good thing. I can't image any Jeep that would shift at 70mph. LOL.

With my 30 x 9.5 General AT2's, 42rle and 3.73 mine is the same. So, I too can cruise along on interstates, but I hate that low rpm shift into overdrive at 45 mph!
