So tonight I run to the store, Jeep starts right up when leaving, no problems as usual. I come out of the store and turn the key and I get nothing. I have full battery power, but it just doesn't turn over. I hear some minor click from the fuse box area, but that is the only noise.

So I call my brother to come take a look at it. Not quite sure what he did, but he hooked up the jumper cables from something on the starter to the battery. He gets it started doing that. I drive home and turn it off, try to restart and nothing again.

Anyone have this problem before? He thinks its the celloid (sp?) and since it is built into the starter, I need a whole new starter. He is not 100% sure, he wants to look at it some more tomorrow. Just trying to give him some reference on things to check before I run out and by a new starter.

He also wanted me to ask if anyone knows where I can get a starter fuse/electrical map or something like that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds legit to me, especially if he is telling you he wants to look into it more, before replacing parts. Sounds like he knows what hes doing.

What you are looking for is a wiring diagram for the starting circuit. Someone here should have one, I think nicolas-eric has an online vehicle service manual with diagrams.

Sounds like the starter solinoid to me too. Means a new starter. The next time it won't turn over, hit the starter with a hammer or a heavy wrench, and see if that gets it to turn over. If it does, you need a new starter.

Invest in a multi voltage meter. You have a JEEP! It wont be the last time that you will use it!

New solenoid will set you back $15. Make sure you disconnect the battery cables before replacing the unit.

Still need some help. After further investigation, we know its not the starter or the solinode. We took the relay out of the power Dist. Center and tested it with a meter. It was good. Then we stuck a wire into the slots that we took the relay from and the engine turned over and started. So we think it is a switch or wire that comes before the PDC. We are thinking it might be the Park/Neutral switch. The question is, anyone know where that switch is?

The switch is located on the transmission shifter linkage.

Ok, finally broke down and took it to the dealer. Broken ignition switch. They say they have to replace part of the steering column and the ignition switch. $988.60 . Just f'n great. Anyone in the Philly or South Jersey area know of a place that would not be so much to fix it?

That's a lot of cash... I'd install the race car switch 'On" push-button start for that money.

Try your local locksmith for a quote. I bet they are much cheaper.

I saw online that I can get ignition units for like $20.... maybe I am missing something that is going to cost me $1000. I will have to look at the diagnostic when I go pick it up. I am going to see if my brother can also rig something in the meantime. I like your race car switch idea, I might have no choice, I am not paying $1000 that is for sure.

I guess my other option is to get a remote car starter and hook that up. I would probably feel a little more comfortable with having that installed rather than a button.

Yeah. Every time a C135 Galaxy or an F-16 fires up out of Lakehurst and flies over your house your car will start. About 1-2 times a year, my mother's garage door would open and sometimes the TV would cycle on and off when they flew over to land in Lakehurst AFB....true story!

I had someone else look at the ignition, he took it all apart and checked it out. He comes back and says all I need is this $45 dealer part and he can fix it. So $1000 to $50. Dealerships are ripoffs.

Not quite. I go back to the dealer to order the part, I find out why they wanted to charge me $1000. They do not sell the piece I need individually, only as part of the steering assembly, which is $500. I am going to go scour some junkyards in the area to see if I can find the piece...

Here is a picture of the culprit. Apparently somewhere along the line, my Jeep has been stolen and someone tore apart the ignition to get it started. In the process, they broke a tiny metal piece off of the ignition... which had been duct taped back on. The duct tape finally gave way which resulted in my problem. I need to find this white piece that goes into the ignition.

did you ever come across that piece. i need one. as of now i have taken out everything and ran a flathead screwdriver straight to the ignition switch. works for now but its pretty annoying
