I had an annoying whistle sound coming from what sound like the top once I removed the hard top and installed the soft top. I switched back to the hard top and still heard the whistle sound.

I read multiple post on how to install the freedom top, removed the panels multiple times and still the annoying whistle. It was driving me crazy! It's a brand new Jeep. I've seen other threads where people are having the same problem in older Jeeps. Most think it's with the freedom top.

Here is what I did to fix the problem. I started by taping the seal above the windshield where the freedom top sits. The whistle sounded like it was coming from above the review mirror. Took the Jeep for a spin and still heard the wind noise. Then I taped up the entire freedom top around the door and down the middle. Took the Jeep out again and still heard the sound. Then I thought, wait I heard it with the soft top too so it's probably not the hard top. Maybe the doors? I taped up the doors and still hear the wind whistle sound. Frustrating. Then, moment of clarity... maybe it around the windshield itself. there is a 1/4 gap around the windshield. So I taped along the top of the windshield and took the Jeep for a spin, and NO WIND NOISE!!

Next how to fix the problem. I took the Jeep to the car wash and spayed water into that seal and it doesn't leak so it's just the wind hitting the crack like how you blow over a flute. I found rubber screen tubbing that is used to go around screens at Lowes and wedged that between the glass along the top only. You probably could go all the way around the windshield if you wanted. It looks almost factor and no more wind noise. I'm so happy!

Hope this helps others with the same problem. Here is pictures of what I used and it installed on the Jeep.

.190"

Also, make sure you use the .190 inch Screen Spline, it fits perfect! See picture above. They make different sizes.

I did not use glue or anything else, for now it's holding in place.

Interesting. I'm gonna have to get the tape out this weekend and see if I can track mine down. Thanks!

Temp change

After a couple weeks and temp changes the rubber came out. I'm thinking about trying clear caulk in the grove between the frame and windshield and putting the rubber on top. Anyone else have any ideas?

Would a larger size spline hold better?

I'm getting this too! I will try to tape the window up and see if that's the same issue, but you describe exactly what I'm experiencing.

I have the same noise in my 08. I ended up filling the void full with silicone and then smoothed it out with my finger. Noise taken care of.

Thanks Crainbox. I had the same noise. I took your advise and ran a piece of tape covering the gap along the top of the windshield. Like magic, no more noise. I found some left over windshield molding from a 92 Dakota (87-96 use the same molding) in my garage. I only used it along the top, it fit perfectly.

Thanks again.

Dumb question......you are talking on putting it on the outside of the windshield?
Yes, if you look at the second picture above, you can see where he pressed it between the glass and the windshield frame at the top. If it holds, this is an excellent solution. I wonder how it will hold up to weather, car wash, etc.

After reading this thread originally, I did the same with some fly screen rubber I had lying around. Had enough to go from about 6in down the screen both sides and right across the top. Stopped the whistle and hasnt come out!

Worked well.

DonC72 asked "Would they sell that stuff in an autozone?"
I looked at Autozone.com and didn't see it. I got mine at a Dodge dealer. These guys list it on their site (I've never bought from them).

To 45 RPM-ACP Yes just like ngiovas said, I "pressed it between the glass and the windshield frame at the top."

To ngiovas The molding held up fine on my Dakota, so it should be ok for us. It has barbs on it that seem to hold pretty good. I'll let you guys know if I have any trouble with it.

Interesting solution but why not just bring it back to the dealer and have them fix it by removing the windshield and reinstalling it properly? Just wondering.
