Two videos demonstrating the problem...

According to Chrysler (and as many previous threads have indicated here on prior-year models), this is a boot problem.

Chrysler wants to put an "updated" boot on it (supposedly a changed design around end of September - I think the service manager said September 28, 2011). Interestingly enough, my Jeep was built end of November so, theoretically, it should have had the updated boot. (It could be that they had a few months of inventory, but I think that's unlikely given lean manufacturing nowadays.)

Anyway, just a heads-up for those of you who have sticks. If you find your 2012 transmission popping out of gear, let your dealer know there's a possible updated boot that might correct the problem.

P.S. - How do you like the 120 MPG I'm getting? Video or it didn't happen, right?

Mine is an 07.

I bought it in July w/ 35k

I did notice when I looked at the Carfax it said the shifter boot was replaced.

No issues at all.

I really believe that some of the popping out of gear issues are driver error.

Don't rush the shifts. Tranny doesn't like it :)
Actually, I've tried both slow and fast shifts (originally thinking that might be the problem). It makes no difference.

I have this problem, but more often it just doesn't seem to go into 4th fully. Doesn't grind when shifting and clutch is in so synchro is Ok. But will sometimes grind when releasing the clutch so it didn't go fully into gear. I have been driving manual transmissions for a long time so I made sure it was not me causing this. When it would occasionally pop out of 4th I knew it was not me. It goes in today or tomorrow to see what the dealer says. I doubt it's the shift boot as it happens when it's warm or cold. I think the shift fork isn't engaging 4th gear correctly.

You have a 2012? When you hear back from the dealership, please post what they say. I agree this happens whether hot or cold (the videos were taken after driving the car for about 45 minutes), but I do also think that it seems to happen more when the car is cold.

Thank you for posting this! I thought it was my fault. I also have this problem where it pops out of 4th gear. I have a 2012 built in late November.

My 2011 does this ...also now that it's cold it grind going into 2nd for first few shifts.

My 2012 doesn't grind in any gear but 4th, and not always that either. Happens more often when downshifting, but doesn't appear to be the synchro as I hear no grind till I
start to let out the clutch. I'll post what the dealer says. It probably won't happen when I bring it in, as that always seems to be the case. :(

I have 2011 wrangler unlimited sahara with 6 speed manual with ~6000 miles on it. Owned it for 6 month.

I have the grinding problem on 4th gear from time to time after the gear is engaged resulting in violent popping out(rarely once a week, always and only on 4th gear, not related to cold) and on cold days after the vehicle was outside several hours, the 4th gear simply pops out with no sound whatsoever once the clutch is released. The problem goes away after ~30min of driving assuming after the problem components fully warms up.

I am thinking of taking it to the dealer, the problem is if its above freezing, the quiet popping out problem is not there or just happens once/twice the first time.

2. I have other problem with the buttons on steering wheel not working for about a month now(for audio controls and trip display info), the cruise control buttons still work fine.

3. There is a third problem I need to mention to the dealer as well, once its cold the tire pressure warning light lights up, I have checked the pressure in the tires and the pressure is 100% fine in all 4 tires, but the warning light is wrongly on when cold. - happened several times. Funny but its almost an indicator what the 4th gear will pop out.

The dealership did replace the boot which does appear to have fixed the problem, so you likely want to pursue that avenue first. Time will tell.

The dealership replaced my boot, but it did not solve the problem. It's not
quite as bad, but still doesn't always go into 4th, and will still once in
awhile pop out. They told me the had to do the TSB first. Now I have
to see what they will plan to do next to really fix it.

If I shift into 4th a bit slower I can actually feel it drop into gear thru
the shifter.

Hmmm. Mine had the problem, got the problem back and the dealer is now talking to Jeep about a whole new transmission. We will see.

Hi all,

went to the dealer, they inspected the transmission on the vehicle and was told the shifter needs to be replaced.
they put the parts on back order since they didn't have any available and will call me once the parts are in. Should take 5 days as I was told.


In the meantime, started to have problems with 2nd and 6th gear similar to the 4th gear, but I can still fully rely on 1st, 3rd and 5th gear.

On the good note, They fixed the steering wheels buttons and replaced one tire pressure sensor as it was faulty, no more tire pressure warning light.

I just bought a 2012 JK 6spd, exact issues hear. Random scratch and or poping out of 4th gear only. It also feels noticably different, soft or less defined than other gears when entering.

I was paranoid thinking there was something going on with my arm and possitioning on the arm rest keeping me from traveling down all the way, lol. The opening post in this thread could have been my own words.

Thanks for posting it. My vin is 152407 if anyone is tracking.

I second the notion about 6th gear. I bought a sport base model with ac package...upgraded at the dealer to 17's and freedom top...raising the gearing is top on my list.

2012 JKU Sahara 6sp tranny failure

My '12 JKU wouldn't shift into first at 3,000mi. It had become very notchy since it turned cold here in the NC mountains. So, off to the dealer. Diagnosis: 1st gear synchros cracked. Chrysler said replace the synchros. We'll see if that solves the problem but I can't see how This made the other gears were so hard to engage. Chrysler said the 1st gear synchros failure would cause problems with the other gears as well??? Something about proper alignment. Guess I'll find out when I test drive it. No POG though.

Update:

I picked up my Sahara today and it shifts sweet again like the day I bought her.

Diagnosis: a main shaft c-clip was not properly seated at the factory (Mercedes) because the gear cogs were not pressed far enough on the main shaft which allowed the 1st and 2nd gear cluster to slip and slide on the shaft and not properly engage the synchros.. That movement destroyed 1st and 2nd gear, 1st and 2nd shared triple cone synchros and the main shaft they ride on. It took 3,000 miles for a hell to break loose.

Repairs Needed: Replace all of the involved parts listed above.

Result: She's back to normal and I'm back in my chair.

Lesson Learned: Stuff happens but come on Mercedes, get in the game!

My Position: The dealer was excellent and I'm still a huge Wrangler fan.

ive been noticing my forth gear is grinding and occasionally popping out of gear. i recently got a lift kit and now really considering taking it back to the jeep dealership for them to fix. does the lift kit void the warranty??

2012 JKSU 6spd. Bought in Dec 2011 as demo with 7K on it.
Tranny replaced in April at like 25K, loud rattling noise that sounded like a heat shield ended up being a bad bearing. Dealer replaced it NO SWEAT.
Noisy 3rd and 4th gear, and started popping out of 4th infrequently in like September, complained in November 2012, Tech who replaced tranny actually said it happened to him on test drive, but that I must not be engaging 4th all the way on the backward throw. WHATEVER. I made sure I was changing properly before brining it in. Besides 2nd and 6th weren't popping out.
Complained again now, and stressed that it is a safety issue. The boot and shifter are on backorder, but only after I persisted did they reveal that there was a TSB for this in September. WTF??? Why wasn't it addressed back in November then when I originally complained over 5000Km ago?
I'm worried that damage has been done because when it pops out it grinds like crazy and bounces against the gear, and grinds when I try to put it back in.

Anyone know if there is potential damage to tranny/4th gear from 10,000km of this happening?

2012 Popping out of 4th

Had the same problem with my 2012 Wrangler popping out of forth, somethimes second. At the 8K service they said it was not a problem, at the 16K service there was a service bullitan fix available, it was not replacing the boot. SO ASK THE DEALER TO FIX IT. It did help a lot, the shifter is tighter and has better detents. Also, the shifetr doesent ocillate back and forth 6 inches when off roading. It does ocassionally still pop out of forth, but I attribute it to a lazy shift.
