I've been a Jeep owner for 11 years, but now I've just ordered a 2014 Jeep Wrangler 2-Door Sahara Automatic. I plan to have a bunch of work done to it before I take possession, but that means I have to get the part/labor pricing sheet done now so I can wrap it all into my loan. I'm having a heck of a time piecing all of this together as a total newbie.
I am mostly a pavement driver (street and freeway) but I want to do some light/intro off-roading like trails. Nothing too crazy because I still need this thing to get me to work.
I've been doing a ton of reading on this forum (you guys and gals are great), but I feel I only know enough to be dangerous now and I'm still having trouble feeling like I have a definitive answers to a few questions. I'm looking for some help and guidance.
Here's what I know:
1) Tires: BFG Mud Terrain KM2 in 35x12.5x15
2) Wheels: 15" black with a touch of chrome (something with the look of the MB Chaos or Pro Comp 152)
3) Lift: Looking at an AEV lift. I don't want any rubbing and I don't want to grind anything down or trim my fenders to make it work.
4) I ordered the Sahara over the Rubicon because everything I read seemed to indicate that I needed to have it re-geared anyway and I liked the price and comforts that the Sahara offered. Hopefully that was a wise decision.
Here's what I'm unsure about:
1) Wheels: I've read a lot about the 15" wheels and it seems like only some will work. Problem is I can't seem to nail down a definitive list. Even the ones that some say will work, others say don't. I don't want to deal with grinding calipers. Are there any 15" black wheels that are a sure thing?
2) Wheels Again: 3.75" Backspacing - I keep hearing this but I'm not sure if it's referring to a part I need or if that's just a spec of the wheel itself. I'm sorry, I know this is probably a really dumb question.
3) Lift: I have no idea what to do about a lift. I've heard some say 2.5" will work for 35" tires. Others say 3.5". Others say you need a body lift as well or some combination of the two. I'm so confused. As I pointed out above, I just know I want 35" tires and I don't want to deal with any rubbing or modification of fenders. What does that mean in terms of a lift?
4) Gearing: I can't seem to find a gearing chart for automatics that covers the new engine (2012 and newer) so I'm not sure what to do about my gearing. I know that the 3.73 is not going to be optimal on the freeway to get me back and forth to work every day, but the opinions beyond that seem to be all over the place and most of them are talking about older models with a different engine.
5) Other Stuff: I know I'll need a way to get a full size spare on the back, but what else am I leaving out? Getting an entire parts and labor list together is a tough task for a newbie like me and I keep thinking that I'm forgetting things.
Really sorry for the length of this post, but I'm a bit lost. I've got to get this list together in the next few days and it's making me more stressed than excited because I think I'm going to screw it up.
Edited to say: Just saw the Bushwacker Pocket Fender Flares and if those would help the situation, I'd be interested for sure.
