The dealership just called me and said everything is going to be covered under the powertrain warranty. He said they are pretty much replacing the entire left side of the engine.

Nice! Given the situation I guess it turned out OK. Granted, this shouldn't be happening in the first place to begin with. Lol.

So question reg. oil filters - where are you guys sourcing Fram Ultra oil filters for 2012/13 JKs? The Fram part no. is XG10955 for 2012-2013. I haven't found this online or in a brick & mortar store yet (Walmart, Amazon, Autozone, O'reilly's). Looks like it is damn near impossible to get this. They have the CG10955 available all over the place.

FYI - I don't think Fram's making those Ultra style filters for 2012/2013s any longer, even though they're still marketing that filter on their website. If anyone finds it somewhere let me know. But for now, I settled for the TG (Tough Guard) style filter instead. Part no. TG10955.

Here is the invoice of all they did.

Thanks for that, TheScott! Appreciate the followup. It's super helpful for someone like me to see what has been done to fix this issue!

Damn! They had to swap both camshafts on the passenger side? Wow. That doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in keeping this car with this engine at this point. Since I have to do it out of my pocket, it looks like it could become super expensive. I've been reading about cylinder head replaced for this issue as well. I don't know what Fiat/Chrysler got right with this engine at this point.

Does anyone have any opinions on replacing this engine with a re-manufactured Jasper (or some other) engine at this point? Once we get into the valve cover, it sounds like it could cost anywhere from $800 to $3000 to fix it. Instead spend $3.5K or $4K and get a decent Jasper engine. Sell the old one for (maybe) $1K and be confident in the engine you have. Or is there a BIG HOLE in my logic here?

2016 tick @ 77k miles fixed

Couldn't pin the tick down to left or right head so ordered a Lisle stethoscope. Wife was right - right side. Ordered two bags of rockers/cam followers (ebay)
and picked up gaskets/seals from local dealer and used the Youtube video (1A Auto) detailing right valve/head cover r/r along with the many videos of rocker replacement. Wasn't sold on removing the right front fender to access the rear outside valve cover bolt but it sure made things easier - especially putting the PCV back in place on the rear of the valve cover.

My bad rocker was the front intake valve - uppermost position as the head sits in the vehicle. Don't know if it gets oil starved there but the other ten rockers were fine. I say ten because I only replaced eleven - that last exhaust valve rocker was too close to the cam sensor discs for me to consider trying to fish a dropped rocker out of that back corner. As it was I dropped almost every one of the new ones I put in - soaked in 5W30 for a few days.

Sketchiest part of process was loosening the cam bearing caps to get enough room to slide out the good rockers. Next time I have to do this I will consider buying the tools to remove tension off the cam phaser chain and properly remove the cams.

Btw, couldn't find torque sequence for the cam bearing caps or valve cover bolts. Parts guy at the local dealer printed out both the torque sheet for the engine and the removal/install instructions for the cams and cover. Got those when I went back to get some of the torx bolts for the bearing caps -didn't have enough downward force on the ratchet head when I was breaking a few loose and didn't want to put a buggered torx head back in.

Took four half-days to get it all done but the tick is history. Burping funnel due in tomorrow so I can drain my mostly distilled water coolant mix to get back to a 50/50 mix but with 90% fresh coolant.

I'm brining my Jeep to the dealer tomorrow for valve train ticking. Only 46,000 miles on a 2015.
My question is, does the repair last?

Thanks for your replies.

Update on repair. They replaced the intake rocker arm on cylinder #4. The tick is gone now. We will see how long this lasts.

They also did the air bag recall.

And filled my tires to 40 psi!!! Felt like I was riding on concrete tires. I have 285/75 R17's and run 29 psi.

2014 Jeep with noisy lifter

Well another Jeep to report with this issue. 2014 Sahara Unlimited. For me started with No1 Cylinder misfire. Replaced Rocker and Lifter. Jeep returned and in two weeks Driver's side ticking all the time. Dealer diagnosis - bad rockers, cam, and lifters.

To make things worse they are now telling me they can not cover under warranty because my vehicle was originally registered in Canada. I was not aware of that as I bought it from a US dealer that never disclosed that.

Any suggestions??

Sorry to hear that! Worth the shot to talk to a JeepCares rep. here (if you haven't already), as well as to check with a dealer in Canada to see if they'll honor factory warranty if you took the Jeep there (maybe a road trip to CA :tomatoes:)

I'll add mine to the list. Awhile back I had the left side ticking away, they replaced all the lifters and both cams - cams both had damage. That was at about 70k. I just hit 140k and the ticking was back again but on the right side. Replaced all lifters and both cams on that side. The cams looked worse than the left side, more sections with marks. Warranty covered the first one, extended covered this one. I must have been getting used to the noise though, now it's so quiet I can't believe it.

2015 rocker tapping

I had the same tapping issue on my 2015 V6 Grand Cherokee (same engine) and had the same exact top end overhaul shown above by "The Scott". i have 89,000 miles on it and it just started in the last 2. Thank God for a 100,000 mi powertrain warranty! Cost me nothing. My 2013 Rubicon is still going strong with no "noise"!

Has anyone done an engine swap, say, with a Jasper made/re-engineered Pentastar (or some other brand)? How much would it cost for engine, labor after sending the old one in, like net-net. Anyone have any approximate numbers? Or thoughts on if this is a good route to go or all Pentastars, Jasper or not, prone to this issue at this point? I'd much rather do this, if this is a viable option that would give me peace of mind to not worry about this issue at all (kinda like how we don't really care about most modern car engines.)

105k on 2015 JKU. Rocker bearing failed and cut into cam. Had all lifters, rockers, and one cam replaced. Now it's good to go but it was definitely the rocker. The bearing looked like an oval.

I daresay FCDJ may have skimped here. a roller (or bushed) bearing rocker arm that sells for less than 8 bucks retail?
