Ok I have a 2016 JKU with 3.6l. Im used to spin on filter from Fords. I like this idea but when I unscrewed my filter cap the filter did not come out with the cap. No big dill the filter was raised so just removed it. When I installed the cap there was nothing for the filter to lock into on the cap side. So I just lubricated o ring on filter pushed it into filter housing then installed cap. Is this ok for this year? All the videos I see "for some reason mainly 2014" have the filter coming off with the cap.
Sorry for such a basic question and thanks for the help.

Some times the filter will come out with the cap. Sometimes it doesn't. Don't let that part bother you.

What should bother you is, if the innards of the cap are missing or not. The cap has a plastic spacer (if you will) and a spring. The spring is mounted between the cap and said spacer thing. This is what's known as the pressure relief valve, or bypass valve. if this is missing. Your oil is not really being filtered as the oil is going around (bypassing to a point) the filter.

This spacer will come out at times. especially if the cap gets dropped to the ground.

hopefully the pic works. if so you can see said innards.

In addition to making sure the innards of the cap are there, it's also very important to never over tighten the filter cap!
