On my new-to-me 2015 JKU Sahara with X package that I am still learning about...

The old registrations were left in this 1-owner car, so I was able to contact the former owners (both 80 years old!) and got a bit of the car's history. It was kind of strange. I had taken it in to have a towbar baseplate installed to tow it behind a motorhome. The installer told me that he could see there had previously been baseplates installed. Initially, this made me wonder how many extra miles the Jeep had traveled.

When I talked to the former owners on speakerphone, the husband (who no longer drives, according to the wife) told me that he had the baseplates installed, but never did tow it...and when he traded it in, he removed them. I didn't get a reason, but he just lamented that I should have contacted him earlier and could have bought them from him.

Then he proudly told me that the Jeep had 2018 Rubicon shocks and coil springs installed. I asked why, and I got the response from the wife, "so it would ride higher" and she added that she would have had them put "bigger tires" on it, but was too late.

I didn't want to dig too much, as the conversation was a little strained and details weren't being clarified. But I am curious about the springs/coils. Is this some common mod? Can I find any details about the mod? Is there some way to verify that is what really happened to the car...do the coils/shocks look different? Thanks for any information.

Rubicon shocks are red. The springs go by number, and are the same per model, except for the Recon model, which has a slight lift. The fronts are 12 to 19, the rears are 54 to 60. It's the last two digits on the spring tags. The higher the number, the more lift.

Jku, will have higher numbers, than a JK from the factory. Hard top, verses soft top will also be compensated for from the factory, because of weight.

Great. Well, the shocks ARE red, now I just need to go check the springs tomorrow and see if I can find some tags to properly identify what is going on. It is a factory HT, so I'll expect to find some tags in the higher ranges. I take it that calling it "2018 Rubicon springs" isn't really relevant...as the year is unimportant.

Actually, the factory has used the same springs, in most of the JK/JKU models from 2007 through 2018.
So it's all based on spring numbers. 18/59, or 19/60 would be good combinations. Just take a look, the tages are easy to see.

What is the "X" package? There have been a number of special packages on all three trim levels, my Chief is a special package (very limited) on the 2017 Saharas) but never heard of the "X" package.

Early JK/JKUs had the base model as X with that on the front fenders, but that was changed to Sport within a few years. There was an X edition of the Rubicon on the 2014 year models as the successor to the 10A (Tenth Anniversary Model in 2013 as 2003 was the first year of the Rubicon) but in 2015 that became the Rubicon Hard Rock).

I have seen photos of an Altitude package that has stylized mountains on the side of the hood and an "X" in a white background on the sides of the cowl. But some photos on the used market have them removed.

Here is a link that will allow you to print a "build sheet" (the heading will say Equipment List) showing all the original equipment your Jeep left the factory with. It will give you a lot of good information. I file my listings with all the other paper work on my vehicles.

I have seen photos of an Altitude package that has stylized mountains on the side of the hood and an "X" in a white background on the sides of the cowl. But some photos on the used market have them removed.
Must be similar to the Altitude package, as a lot of the items are the same in the 2015 X package. It is a "Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4x4", and here is the option section from my window sticker and a few pictures of the differences in vented seats, white dash accents, black wheels, etc. The grill and headlights also has black inserts. I think the Altitude has those inserts as well:

Thanks for the info. My front coils end in 17, and my rears end in 59. The Jeep seems VERY stable and sturdy, even at freeway speeds. The height is really comfortable and makes for easy entry with the Rock Rails. I did verify that all 4 shocks are red.

It is funny...the only thing missing from the car's spec sheet were the "All-Weather Slush Mats" so I am thinking they probably kept them to transfer to a NEW Wrangler. (I've already replaced them with Mopar mats.)

Love this car more every day!

17/59 is pretty normal and nothing extraordinary for any 4 door. the 17's are on the lower end for 4 doors and the 59 on mid to upper end. If you want a teeny bit more find some 19 fronts and 61 rears.

Thanks for that link. I note that it is case sensitive (I didn't capitalize the letters on my first try, and it failed).

Yeah, I forgot to warn you about that. Looks like an interesting package. I think the main difference is that I don't believe the regular Altitude package had the power dome hood. (My Chief is a similar package except it has the silver 17" Recon wheels with BFG Mud Terrain tires).

I checked my springs and they are 17 in front and 58 in the rear.

It must have been a late year run, for that grille is one that was on the '16 and up Sahara models only with silver accents. The other unique aspect of the Chief is that it came only with the white hard top and white side stripes. It was replicating the look of the Jeep Cherokee Chief from the late '70s.

Did your X come with optional rear locker? Fun part of special editions is easier to spot “your JKU” in a parking lot.

My JKU Sport S came with 17/59 springs and I found it had too much front rake, and not enough front suspension travel. My wife’s JKU Moab with 18/59 and looked nice and level until the winch was added.

No on the rear locker. I do love the looks of my hood, just for aesthetics sake. Breaks up all that metal in a nice way.

So far, it has taken a lot of my evening time, pouring over the internet looking at goodies to add to a wish list. I feel sad, in that I currently have no more items en route. I installed the Wild Boar bars yesterday and the missing bumper cover plug I found, so nothing more to install. I do feel the need to get a new license plate mount, as the Previous Owner, when wiring the Jeep to be towed, added a 4-round connector to buggar up the front of the plate mount. It is disconnected now. I think he planned on adding magnetic lights on the back (at least he didn't drill holes in the top) but I don't know where he planned on sticking magnets.

OK, I tried 3 times rotating this picture and saving it...but it still comes out 90 degrees off. I have shopping to do, dammit!

In my case when I come out to the parking lot, I just look for the glow.:winner:

Yep, it doesn't take long to realize that JEEP stands for Just Empty Every Pocket.
