Ill be picking up my "new" 85 CJ7 this week. I know my way around the 258's pretty well, but this one has a swapped in 304 with a vintage R4B dual plane intake and Edelbrock performer 1406 carb on it. Failed smog due to high HC and CO, passes for Nox. Do I have any prayer of getting this beast through emissions considering this was originally a 4.2L Jeep? They didn't fail it immediately for not having original smog equipment. I also can swap my motorcraft 2100 off my 258 if it will make it any easier.

I've never had to deal with a smog test thank goodness.
Whatever carb you use make sure its tuned correctly and make sure the engine timing is correct. High HC usually means unburned fuel.
As for CO, do you have a functional catalytic converter?

This Doesn't help answer your question. Your profile list you in Northwestern Indiana. I assume near Chicago. I live in Bloomington Indiana and we don't have smog checks or inspections here. Are you being smog checked for Indiana or the peoples republic of Illinois? What happens if you don't pass?
