New to Jeeps and the forum and need some opinions. I just got a 2001 Wrangler I-6 Sport, with 215 size tires and 3.07 gearing, so its pretty much stock. I have been reading the forums extensively for upgrading the overall 'look'. I will use the Jeep probably half on road, and half off. Its not used for commuting, just a 'toy for tooling around town and hitting the Colorado mountains. I have been contemplating putting on 31, 32, or 33 inch tires. How do I decide which way to go? I really am leaning towards the 32" inch option right now, since it seems like a good compromise. Here are my thoughts on each, help!

31s - Would need to switch out gearing from 3.07 to 4.11. I could keep the stock 15x7 wheels for now saving upfront cash, and add a 2 inch budget boost for no tire rubbing.

PROS: least expense, could use GY Duratracs, minimum suspension mods
CONS: worried the Jeep still looks too 'stock'.

32s - Would need to switch out gearing from 3.07 to 4.11. Upgrade the stock 15x7 wheels to 15x8 to allow the wider tires, and add a 2 inch budget boost and a 1 inch body lift for no tire rubbing.

PROS: from the 32 inch jeep pics, the bigger wider wheel looks a bit nicer, good tire to body ratio I think. While I would have to put on body lift and budget boost, suspension still is close to stock.

CONS: no Duratrac option, fewer tire choices, need to buy wheels right now, worried the 1 inch body lift + 2 inch budget boost will not be enough lift on the trails.

33s - Would need to switch out gearing from 3.07 to 4.56. Upgrade the wheels to accommodate the 33's. Install a real lift to 3.5 or 4 inches

PROS: better off roading, still a nice look
CONS: More expensive lift (5x?), out of the stock suspension, stock axles not enough, starting to exceed my budget, starting to put too much money into this old rig ;)

Sorry, forgot to mention the 5 speed manual transmission, and the fact my wife really doesn't know what tires and wheels cost, + the cost of the 'invisible' gearing change. Can only do this once ;)

Regearing shouldnt be a factor. If your going to do it it should cost about the same for 4.56 as it would the 4.11s. As far as lift goes if your not sure 2" is plenty then you wont ever be satsified. Same as once you put on 33s your going to want 35s. Its a vicious cycle

Well, depending on how abusive you are off road, you wouldn't have to change the rear axle for 33s. A D35 can easily take 33s. 3.07s on 33s would be a rough one.

On the otherhand, if you lock your rear diff, and hammer the thing....you'll be breaking many an axle.

Also, if you don't mind the look of 33x10.5s than you can keep your stock 15x7 rims. I would suggest something with a 4 inch backspacing though. Crager soft 8s are cheap and look great.

I too, am stock right now and like the Cragar Soft 8's. I'm thinking of going to 33" with a 3.5" Rubicon Express lift + a 1" body lift.

Check out this site I found earlier on this forum......GREAT pic's of rigs with different size lift kits and tire sizes to help those like us.....

The cheap route would be 31s. All i had to do is add a couple washer to the steering stops. After that there was no major rubbing issues.But if you want larger tires there are more tire options in 33s than 32s. Chances are you could find a set of 33s near or possibly even cheaper than 32s. If your only going to do it once make sure its what you want the first time...

You can get enough lift to clear 33's with a 2.5" coil lift and a 1-1.5" body lift for a lot less $ than a 4" coil lift.. Gears are probably going to be changed anyway, and like someone above me mentioned, it doesn't cost more to do 4:56's than it does to do 4:11's.... Wheels are cheap if you go steelies..... And 33's are ok on a D35, as everyone has already said.

You can run 3:07's with 33's for a while, till you save up the $ for gearing. You probably won't like it, but you can do it... ;) I have them, but mines an auto, I still don't want to kill myself, inspite of what you will read in the forums...... :)

Thanks for all the good input. I'll keep thinking a bit more. I am thinking of throwing on 31s for now on the old wheels, and at least get this started. Sounds like I don't have to lift to run the 31's on-road, and I can get buy with the 3.07 gear ratio for a while w/o using 5th gear. Then maybe decide on the lift and/or gear change, all dependent if I am happy with the 31 size. At that time I can decide 32 or 33, and resell the 31s with the stock 15x7 wheels (i would think some slightly used GY Duratracs are probably easily sell-able).

I have an '02, I6, five speed. 31x10.50x15 on stock suspension, cragar soft 8s with 4" backspacing. No rubbing.

When you put in the budget boost of 2" do you need to change the shocks?

I'm kinda in the same boat, I want 33's but hard to get the wife on board dropping that kinda cash, and I know as soon as I put 33's Im gonna want 35's.

I have zero lift only stock and have 32-10.5/15,s no rub . As for gears I,m still useing 3.07 and will keep them no big deal at all . I run up to 55 in 4th then go to 5th

The only thing I will add to the equation is....the larger the tires, or addition of steel wheels equal more weight, thus making the brakes work harder than what they were designed to handle. The brakes now become a even bigger weak link.

33" I-6 cyl, 5 sp man. 3" susp lift. 3.07 gears. It's fine. If I decide to do any rock crawling or climbing steep hills I would need to regear. It's fine for street, hwy, trails, mud, snow. Looks good too.

i dont think you need to regear for 31s...and you dont really need a lift while yes it looks way better with a lift its not a must. 32s: i wouldnt go that route personally i mean 33s and like 4" lift would work great and look even better and like someone said before you are not going to be satisfied with w/e you do well, not for long anyways.

Just a thought, if you are set on doing the regear, you may as well go ahead and slap a Aussie locker in there at the same time. I also have the 3:07s on my 2003 TJ with a 5-speed running 31-10.5-15s and no current lift. It does well as is running around town, but on the highway with a strong head wind it seldom gets shifted past 4th gear. I can run 70mph in 4th and still be well under 3K on the tach.
I do have a set of 2" delrin spacers to install when I get the opportunity.

I put on 33 for a month and now I want 35. Dump the wife and go as high as you like.

i would love to get 33's, but my 4 banger would not like it unles spending another $1200 to regear......
