Stock tire has 6.25" of backspacing. So 6.25-4.763=1.477 pushed farther from the suspension. 1.477x2=2.954 allowed extra width on stock rubber. 255/75 is 10.04 wide. 10.04+2.954= 12.994. With the 4.763 back spacing you can get up to a 13" width tire. In theory.

I run 5.2" backspacing with 35/12.5-17's toyos.

If you are talking about the Nittos, yes. 8.5 is the minimum width for them.

Is that a minimum 'safe' width? i.e. off-roading won't cause/result in any issue with that combo. Also YES I was looking at the nitro ridge grappler tires.

many people mount them on stock rims which are 7.5" actually offroad the narrower rim the better to a point. I would not mount them on a 6" rim but 7.5" would be fine.
