A few weeks ago I got out in my 94 Jeep Wrangler and played in the snow during a major snow storm we had in KY recently. I came upon a couple that was stuck in the snow and to help them out. I placed my Jeep against there little Ford Escape car and pushed them several miles to a gas station. I came home and the next morning got up and went out in the mnts and played some more in the deep snow. The following day I drove it again and the 4 wheel drive worked fine. We got another snow that evening and when leaving to come home I noticed my Jeep was handling funny. It was struggling to climb what should have been an easy incline. I stopped and made sure I had my 4 wheel drive engaged, I did. Only my rear wheels were turning. I kept pulling on the 4 wheel drive shifter back and forth and finally it engaged. Well now to make this story shorted, it will not engage. So I went over in the garage and jacked all 4 wheels off the floor and placed the Jeep in 4 low or high and my front wheels will not turn. My drive shaft coming out of the transfer case is not turning. After reading this does anyone have a clue what night be wrong with my 4 wheel drive and keeping it from engaging. Has this happened to anyone before? Thank you.

Oh yeah I wanted to post that I have already checked the vacum and the actuator switch on the front stump and it is sliding all the way over and I even took a screw driver and manually pushed it over and my front wheels are still not turning.

If my problem is in the transfer case, are they easy to work on? I had a friend tell me that in his opinion I may have the chain inside of the transfer case that drives the front stump. Does anyone have a schematic of a transfer case?

Check the vacuum lines first. Our YJs are getting old enough that the rubber lines are cracking. Easy fix if the hose has simply become disconnected from the coupler on the transfer case. The other location is the vacuum hose up to the front axle that could be disconnected, this is the "shift on the fly" feature on YJs that eliminated having to get out and lock the hubs.

Thx amx4080 but I have checked all of the vacuum lines and in doing so I found a hole in the diaphragm on the stump so I cleaned it up well and used some JB Weld to seal and it works fine now. I even took the whole unit out of the front stump and had a friend engage in and it slides all the across. I also took a screwdriver and manually pushed over the thing that engages the 4 wheel drive and it still wont engage.

I'm stumped then. If you didn't have it up on jackstands, my next question would be, "is the lightbulb in the dash out?" :D

The unit on the front axle that engages the axle may be out, but sight unseen I can't be sure and I don't know a test for it besides what you are doing. Good luck.

yeah the lite quit coming on but Im thinking the reason it quit working was because of the pin hole I found and fixed. The lite woks fine now. I dont know maybe there is something Im over looking...

I had the opposite problem on an '87 Wrangler, where it wouldn't come out of 4wd. The lines were fine, but the coupling in the transfer case for all the vacuum lines was cracked. Replacing that piece solved my problem, but that is no promise on your problem. Worth checking is all.

probably something on the outside of the gearbox or underneith, I doubt its trouble inside the case. Most likely a wire or vacuum line or linkage that came loose from all the snow packed under there.

Well actually when I had all this trouble was after I was in some real deep snow and snow and ice pushed up and underneath the jeep tearing the vacuum hose off.

I currently have the same problem with my 94. I used the 4WD about 3 days ago, then i took it in and had a 2.5 inch skyjacker lift on it. then i went out yesterday and ended up getting stuck in a dry creekbed. the front wheels won't engage and the dash light won't iluminate either. i've tried looking at it, but i have no idea what i'm looking at down there, and my Chilton's manual doesn't have anything on it.

Put the 4wd lever in 4hi, shut the Jeep off and put it in gear, crawl under it and try to manually turn the driveshaft. If it turns the trouble is in the t-case, if it doesn't the trouble is in the front end.
