My Jeep is a 6 speed, and I've never had a 5 speed Jeep so I can't help ya there.
But the 6 speed is a good trans, first gear is lower than first in the 5 speeds. And the 6 speed is a pretty tough trans.
People complain that the shifts are crunchy, the trans grinds, and pops out of gear. I've found that if you don't shift it like its a sports car it won't grind or crunch, remember its more of a truck than a sports car. As far as it popping out if gear, if you pay attention you can feel when the shifter isn't fully in gear, when that happens just very slightly let the clutch out and it'll slide right into gear.

I have the 5 Speed & its just like JDT says.." if you don't shift it like its a sports car it won't grind or crunch". Only problem I had w/it popping out of gear was because the shifting boot inside cover was causing a problem which was fixed. Otherwise, 5 speed/6 speed...its all good.
I like my 6spd. But like everyone else said you have to shift it like an old truck. In the morning when it cold going from 1-2 i have to pause a bit for the synchros to line up otherwise it grinds. You get used to it and other than that it's a good trans.

Make sure when you drive it you take your hand off the shifter to see if it pops out of first or reverse.
Same as what everyone else has said about the six speed. Mine only pops or grinds in reverse if I dont get it full engaged.
I had my 6 speed pop out of 1st once, but that was my fault. I had just learned how to drive stick, and hasn't pushed it completely into gear. Like everyone else said, just don't shift too fast and it'll shift ok.
I've got a 6 speed transmisson for sale of anybody is interested !
1st gear in the 6th speed is really low for street driving. You shift from 1st to 2nd quickly because it is so low. It's great if offroad and crawling, but in my opinion for street use it's really short. But with the 6spd you can start off in 2nd gear.

Yes but only if it has the correct gearing/tire combo, 31's and 3.07 starting in second doesn't work very well. :banghead:
