75th AniversaryJK tire question

I have a 2016 2 door JK, 75th-anniversary edition, completely stock. Currently I have the stock 245-75r17 ties on it. I would like to upgrade to 255-75r17 tires. It is time for new ones, and I have seen other models of the JK with 255-75's. Will there be any issues with the 255's on stock wheels? Wheel well clearance is not an obvious issue, I am concerned with suspension clearance.

by the numbers, that would be 10mm wider and 7.5mm taller. I don't see where that would be a problem, but i am not a suspension guy so I won't say 100%, just giving you how much bigger the numbers say it would be.
The majority of JK came with the 255/75R17s including some special editions of the Sahara (like my '17 Chief). Sahara models generally came with 255/70R18 tires. Both sizes are 32" tall. The 255s are only 3/10 of an inch wider and 1/2 inch taller. I doubt you will see much difference. If you want to go even a bit bigger,

As stated in the above, my Chief came with 255/75R17 tires on 17" x 7.5" factory wheels with 6" of backspace. (Almost all of the alloy JK wheels are that spec). I went with new wheels (17" x 8.5" with 5.2" backspace) with 285/70R17 tires. They are 1.3" taller and 1.5" wider than your tires. The height is ok unless you need a lot of articulation when off road, but the width will rub unless you either use spacers or change the wheels.

I wasn't going after the larger tires initially, my goal was the CJ Retro wheels. When I found out that the 285's would just barely peak out from under the flares (sidewall only, tread is still under) with the change in backspace, I thought the slightly larger tires would be good, and I don't regret it at all. They are also LR C as are your factory tires. Most of the 275s you see touted on here are almost all LR E which have stiffer sidewalls (because of the additional load capacity) which gives a bit stiffer ride.

Either way, you should reprogram your computer for the change in tire size although the 255/75R17s make only a 2% change in the speedometer and odometer, your shift points on your transmission are also affected. You can get the OBDII adapter and a Jscan app for your phone for about $60. You can also set the TPMS threshold down so you can run 30-31 pounds of air in the tires without having the TPMS nanny fussing at you. (I set mine to 25 PSI and run 31. If it alarms, I know I have a tire issue).

Thank you for your reply. I have seen the 255's stock on occasion, not knowing about the particulars with each model... I can get a good deal on new duratracs so I will be going for it...
I like the Duratracs and have them on my '03 TJ. I tried to get them in the 285s when I put the new wheels and tires on the Chief two years ago, but they were on serious back order. I waited for 6 weeks, but they were still 2+ months out. I opted for the BFG KO2s instead for the Chief. They were a little higher, but comparing the two, I would be hard pressed to choose one over the other.

I would recommend you also do the spare. While you can get by with the smaller spare as an emergency, keep in mind that it is now 7 years old and may be showing the effects of sun damage. You might want to consider going to a 5 tire rotation. I do that on both my Jeeps. With only putting a few miles on them (less than 3K on the TJ and less than 8K on the Chief) they will age out before they wear out.

I have always done the 5 tire setup. The only reason that my tires have lasted this long is the 5 tire rotation (always clockwise)....

I do not know that the reprogramming would be worth it for such a small size change. I really like the way that the Duratracks ride, I keep my pressure at stock, it just seems to work for me..

The max tire size you can comfortably run on a stock setup is 33". The 255/75/17 measures 32", so this fitment will work just fine with what you are wanting to do with your JK.

The Duratracs are a solid option and tend to work well for many people. I checked stock with the manufacturer and see that the tire is readily available.
My only issue with the Duratracs are that they get noisier as they wear. KO2's don't do that.
