Ok got the interior gutted for the linex and bought a gal of the factory color paint.
got a replacement tailgate. I plan on painting this in my driveway a couple panels at a time. so I started with the new tail gate since I wanted it on for the linex in the tub.

That’s a great buy with a hard top, hard doors, and Moab wheels!!

Also, love the color, looking forward to following this.

What are your thoughts on engine/trans options?

I thought so in my neck of the woods (wa) its hard to find anything decent for less than $5000 and as you know the hard top will be nice here in the winter.
As for eng I'm going with an ATK perf reman 350 vortex 350hp 400 ft lbs tq.
no computer, stand alone fuel inj , trans is a 700r4 auto with a JB adapter to the 231j np.
I thought about the ls route but I like the idea of no computer just an HEI ign.
I got the trans & adapter the 8.8 rear and a 4;10 D30 also the 4"RC lift.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Agreed! It took me several months to find a 4.0 that wasn’t trashed for less than $5k anywhere near Seattle.

I like the sound of your engine direction. Starting to think about that in the next couple years.

Sounds like a solid plan to me.

I am a little confused on what you mean by stand alone fuel injection with no computer. Are you going to run an old school Corvette mechanical fuel injection?
What I'm looking at is the new Holley Sniper system, yes it has a computer but the only sensors that it needs that are not built in is an O2 sensor. So it is basically a stand alone system. I'm not completely sold yet I might just use a carb. The reviews I've read have been promising and a friend just got one for his older Ford truck. Well see fuel inj would be nice. The old school mechanical systems are more race, just don't work worth a shit on the street. IMO

What tire size do you ultimately want to go with?

I'd skip the 4" RC lift and am more inclined to go with a 2.5" lift and larger fenders for clearance and travel. Since you plan on repainting, it would be a perfect time to install these.

I am running a 4.5" RE Extreme lift now, but I'll be switching back to my 2.5" springs once I order my new Metalcloak fenders. With a 2.5" lift and Metalcloak or similar fenders, squeezing 35" tires underneath is easy and offers equivalent or more wheel travel than most 4" lift springs, except that you have better driveline angles and a lower center of gravity.

Everything else seems like a solid option. The Cobra clutches in the F8.8 add some good bite in sandy/muddy terrain. However, if you plan on exploring the Rockies much, consider a selectable locker (though again, the Front LL + Rear LSD is a good combo with flexible springs!).

Thanks pc1p,
Thats a nice blue jeep you have. I'm thinking something like 33s nothing bigger than 35s I like the narrower tire profile. I already have the lift kit, bought it on sale a few weeks ago. I like the look of your jeep. I kind of like the stock fenders with a wider flare, I just haven't seen any aftermarket ones that grab me. I'm kind of old school like that, I like things to as stock as possible and go like a bat out of hell.

Not as much as I would like, the wife and I bought the house a couple years ago for future retirement. I spend 4-6 weeks in the winter and then a few day's or week whenever. I built the camo 90yj last year. (my first jeep, always wanted one since I was a kid) Trailered it down last february and left it there. Had a blast puttin around in the desert. Plan on being down there most of the time in about 4years, I hope.

From what I have heard/read the Sniper system is pretty good. stupid simple install and it is not a carb. I will never go back to a carb... especially on an off road rig.
I just finished reading your build, WOW that is some jeep, great fabrication and design. The only draw back I can see with the sniper is cost. Ive got the 2150 on my 90 4.2 and I'm even considering put the 2brl sniper on it. Just kind of waiting to see how my buddy's works out.
Heres some pictures of last couple day's work (a couple hours after work)

Thanks for the kind words. Any aftermarket FI set up is going to leave a dent on the wallet. Since you are looking at a Small Block Chevy, wouldn't it make sense to get a TBI engine and just use the factory computer? It is certainly one of the easier systems out there.

The problem with the TBI is its none adj, The TBI engines were low perf so even a custom flash to would not really be adequate for the eng I'm planning. And after buying the TBI computer, wiring harness and sensors I would only be a few hundred from the cost of the sniper system it would be the same thing with the tuned port but it would probably cost as much in the long running and have no provision for adj/tuning. and I wiring mess also.

Makes sense if you want to hop up the engine. A stock 350 really is plenty for a Jeep and a mild cam and set of headers is still doable with the computer for a little more go. Don't let me talk you out of more HP though.

I'm actually going for torque, but the engine will be the last part of this build. A lot could happen between now and then. Well see what comes along.
Now for some progress.
