I have a 91 wrangler with 6 cylinder and when I disengage the clutch a noise appears and when I engage the clutch the noise goes away the shifter seems out of place when in nuetral ,my first post thanks for any help, spud

first I would check the clutch fluid level, its mounted near the master cylinder.

Yeah, check fluid first but;

if it kind of chatters like a squirrel then its your "throw out" bearing. It makes chattering noises when its starting to go bad. Once engaged, it can't flop around anymore hence why its quiet when in gear. If not replaced eventually it will slide off the front of the shaft and you'll have no clutch. My Ranger got that bad and when it slid off the end in there it shot fluid all over the hot clutch plates. I had a ton of white smoke roll out everywhere from under the truck and under the hood lol.
