97-00 mpg

Im in the market for a 97-00 tj and was just wondering what kind of fuel economy these jeeps are getting nowadays - I had a 90' 4cyl manual but I drove it pretty hard and had tires that were too big for the motor with the gearing that it had, it didnt get great mileage.

Crappy.... 15-20 as a ball park scale for both engines would be my best guess, as I stopped checking a few years ago.
I am running 01 sport 4.0l with a 4 inch lift and 33's and I get about 19 mpg and that is up and down mountain roads. The lift and tires only use 2 gallons more for the same distance.
'00 Wrangler no lift and 31's I6 Auto......15-18 mpg
I get 28mpg GPS verified with my 4-popper. 4" currie coils, 33x12.50" MT/Rs, and stock 4.11 gears. 1998 TJ - these are not common results though; usually a freshly tune-upped 2.5L gets in the 22-24mpg range with a sensible driver.

Well sure you do but who wants to only go 25mph...;)
It holds 75 comfortably in 5th gear, and on a good day will cruise at 90 all day long :D I swear my 2.5L has been blessed with extra powers from the Jeep gods.
98 Wrangler no lift and 31's I6 Auto....15 if i'm lucky... go over 65 and its somewhere like 12...really sad... i have aftermarket intake (waste of money), throttle body spacer (waste of money), exhaust and cat converter
Stopped keeping track. At $48 for a full tank, I just wish it was farther. But a jeep is so much for fun than some little hybrid.

I thought that was the least I could do for Frank.....he let me drive the Rubi today :p

of course I should have known there was a catch....he was much too quick to say ok, when I asked to drive it!!!

bull shit the best mpg you will get with the 4.0 is 16 the worst is 13
With the right gearing you can push em up to about 21 if you stay at 65 or less. One of my wheeling buddies who drives out to New Mexico every year for the Chile Challenge says that this is what he's getting. This is on 35"s and 4.56's
