Hey guys! I'm the new owner of a '98 TJ. I've had it about a month and just last week it did something weird. The fuel light came on (and I was no where near a gas station) so I got off an exit on the highway. Well, mid-turn the engine just shut off. When I pulled over and turned off everything, the Jeep started up just fine. It's done this three times now, everytime after a hard turn and the gas light had JUST come on. It's also given me no errors or check engine lights.
Has this happened to anyone else? I'm going to get it checked out, but being of the female persuasion I wanted to do some research first so I don't get jipped. (An honest mechanic is hard to find in these parts.)
I know for sure it needs a tune up, but could the spark plugs really cause the engine to just cut off whilest driving?

the problem might the fuel pump is going bad or it could be just a electric connection that has weak connection, but I'm not 100% positive.
Where are you located?

That sounds viable. Hopefully it won't be too much trouble.

Hell yes, I have been through the same thing in my 97TJ! The jeep would die after a quick turn in one direction. I think it was the left turn that did it, but dont recall for sure because it's been several years since it has happened. I can say for sure that it only happened when turning one direction- couldn't make it happen turning the other way.

It sputtered and died like it was out of gas. Sometimes, it would just sputter, and I could feather the gas and drive out of it. Other times I just gave it the clutch, and pop-started it after the turn.

My jeep had just had the fuel tank sending unit recall performed when I noticed the problem, so I went back to the stealership to ask about it. After a 10 minute chat with the service guy, I decided I wasn't getting far. I also didn't like that my 19 gallon tank would only take 15-16 gallons after running out of fuel around corners!

I ended up dropping the tank to see if there was a wire or obstruction that was keeping the float in the tank from dropping all the way down, or some other craziness in there. I pulled the tank, opened it up, found nothing out of the ordinary. I flipped the float up and down to make sure it had free movement, scratched my head at the wasted effort since I found nothing, and then reassembled the tank. The next fill at the pump took 18 gallons, and it's never sputtered again since then. It's been over 10 years, too. The light still comes on, and even when I think I am on fumes, The pump shuts off at 16 gallons ( I have 19g tank). But even then, it's never sputtered around a corner since.

I don't know what the problem was, maybe just the alignment of the sending unit and lid assembly was a degree it two off?? The lid with the sending unit attached screws off, so it's a possibility. Sorry I can't give you a more specific cause, but that was the pure f'in magic fix for me anyway.

At least you know that someone else had the exact same issue, so your not crazy. You can drop the tank, check it all out and reassemble it all in a few hours if you decide you have had enough of the sputtering. Damn, that was a frustrating problem- I feel for you.

I've got a problem with mine everytime I fill up it only gets 15 to 16 gallons and the pump stops telling me it's full when I have a 19 gallon tank too, after I fill up I start to drive and a few miles down the road my gas light comes on and the fuel gauge drops to empty like I have no gas, then after I use a little gas or if I stop and turn the ignition off then restart then the fuel gauge comes back and light goes off! Never had a problem with it stalling out when I turn a corner but I did the magic jeep code check myself and it spit out a code, I called a buddy of mine who's a master mechanic and he told me what it was and then looked on his all data computer and printed out the pump diagram for me and said it's the fuel level sensor switch that's going bad causing my jeep to do this, in most vehicles it's a simple sensor replacement but in my jeep he says it doesn't look like it can be replaced, I'll have to buy a whole new fuel pump assembly to fix that problem!!

That's a good idea!! I will check with the local dealer and see if mine has the recall and see if it was replaced! Thanks firemonkey, btw mine is an 05' do u know if that year had a recall too?

oh really ? i have the same problem with the needle dropping on my gauge , do you have the recall number ? stealership , LMAO !
