Hi everyone.. This is my first post as ive just become the owner of a 99 jeep wrangler se. Up until december 8th 2006 i had been a die hard motorcyclist, so much so that i sold my truck & bought a second bike. Dec 8th i was wrecked and as a consequence I am unable to move my left arm (medical progress is slow at this point.) I was given the jeep by my mother who no longer uses it so i could trade it in on an automatic econobox, but i figure i could get a lot more for it if i sell it privately... aaanyways, back on subject: before i sell this beaut (id love to keep it but its a standard, doh!) I'd like to fix whatever is preventing the xfer case from staying in the 4wd gear options. My mother had the jeep lifted a good amount.. 4.. maybe six inches by a local jeep tuner (five or six years back so i cant raise cain w/ them) and since then the shifter has been inclined towards the front of the vehicle and the xfercase doesnt want to play properly. Im assuming they didnt put in some sort of spacer which compensates for the lift but before i tear into virign territory id like to get the opinions of professional jeepheads.

anywho, id greatly appreciate any advice or pointers on this so i can get a car and stop taking the bus to get around town ;)

ps: the jeep has massive tires, shiny wheels & a 4banger.. someone laughed all the way to the bank after "helping" my mom. Id like to find 'em and kick them where it hurts.. if i wouldn't fall over groaning from the strain ;)

There's one of two things happening and maybe even a combination of both. Due to the lift the TCase shifter linkage is binding up and not allowing full travel. Or the shifter itself could be hitting the tub and not allowing the full range of motion. Do you have any issues with it staying in first or with it wanting to grind a little when you try to put it in?

There are adjustment brackets that can help put the linkage back in it's proper alignment. This is a fairly common occurence on lifted TJ's since the linkage actually mounts to the tub and not just the TCase.

Mine did the same thing after I installed my lift. It would constantly pop out of 4lo into neutral. you can fix it by adjusting the linkage to your transfercase which should only take a 1/2 hr. to do. Just park your jeep in neutral with e-brake on. Climb underneath and look above your tranmission skid plate on the driver side and you should see the linkage assembly. Now if you pull and push on it you should hear it shifting in and out of 4lo and 2wd may take a little effort on your part. Get a good idea of how it works and if you push or pull to put it in 2wd by checking the lever in the cab. Now after getting a good idea on the workings loosen the nut/bolt (I can't remember what it was) that holds the lever to the linkage (it should be near the rear of the linkage). Now make sure the linkage is all the way in 2wd and the lever is in the 2wd position fully also. Now retighten the bolt/nut. After completing mine was about a quarter to a half inch. away from the linkage end yours may vary, now go into the cab and pull on the lever to make sure everything is shifting smoothly in and out of 4lo and 2wd if not adjust as necessary till you think you got right. then take it for a spin to test it out.
