After a hard few days of off roading my A/C compressor is whining like crazy. I tried puting oil in it but it still sounds bad. I am trying to figure out my options. Anyone else have this problem? If so what did you do to fix it? I really don't want to buy a new compressor if possible. I was under water alot too. The pully on the clutch when not engauged is a little sloppy. I wonder if that is it. Does the pully on the clutch usually have some slop in it when not enguaged? Any feed back would be great. I guess If it keeps up I will get a new compressor. I may see about rebuilding it myself.

Does it make the noise when the clutch is engaged?

Or not engaged?

Or all the time no matter what you do?

I guess I need to rephrase the question.

When the AC clutch is engaged - the compressor turns. Is the noise then or when it drops out of engagement during the normal cycling?

If the noise is only when the clutch is engaged - then it's the compressor.

If it's only when the clutch is not engaged, it's the clutch bearing.

If it's all the time, both engaged and not engaged - it's something else, like an idler.

I beleave its the clutch. I also noticed that the clutch drops in and out pretty random now and the noise changes when the clutch engauges.

The pulley should not have any play. It runs on ball bearings. When mine went, I was initially getting some random noises .. grinding & squeals. As it wore a bit more, I saw a lot of black dust and the start of shiny metal filings.

Had to replace the compressor ... I could not find just the pulley assembly.

is there a way to tighten the belt? I had a new one put on when i had the water pump and clutch fan replaced. Now i get random squeaks and when it rains it squeaks bad.

If it's your AC comp and you don't want to replace it and are not worried about not having AC then just get a belt for a Jeep without AC and bypass the compressor altogether.

it is self tighten when you accelerate. it doesn't need to be tighten manually
If your belt is loose, it is probably time to just replace it or it got stretched by someone taking it off and putting it back on or from normal wear and tear. Either way, it needs to be replaced with a new one because once they're stretched, they're no good. I'm not an expert, but this is what I was told by a mechanic.
well this is a pain considering that it was just replaced by a mechanic

mine used to squeal when the compressor came on(any heat setting but floor) sometimes it would go away when it warmed up but still get a squeal once in a while. had no spring loaded idler pully like i'm used to-mine slides up/dn on a long bolt assy. have to get it tight or will make noise. also if you get a new belt-get the # off the old one-parts stores are nortirious for giving the wrong belt.
