Hello,

I recently bought a new JLU Sahara and it didn't come with a trailer hitch/tow kit. Before buying the JLU, I had a Patriot (yikes) that I had Uhaul install a trailer hitch to with no problems.

However, around the same time I had a friend with a JLU have Uhaul install a hitch and they completely screwed up his wiring and backup camera. I want to get a hitch installed on my new Sahara, but am fearful that Uhaul doesn't have the competence with the higher end vehicle wiring and fear complications (yes I know this is possible with any non-dealer service).

Does anyone have any experience with the installing a hitch post buy? I'm sure the dealer can do it, but assume it'll be way more expensive.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I just installed a hitch recently and it was a very simple job. There are many different manufacturers and instructional videos that show how to do it after market. Check out YouTube for example installations

A little over a month ago I installed mine. The hitch fits on the beam which usually has some rough welds that require some light filing or encouragement with a large hammer. Hitch install was under 30 minutes. Wiring was about an hour or so but I ran the wires high underneath and did not run them through the interior. I only did a 4 pin harness.

Drawtite 76104 hitch. This is the longer tongue hitch which will come out flush with your bumper. You do not want the a short tongue - I learned the hard way.
Curt 58300 harness mount. Not required but keeps the connector in a nice place.
Curt C56407 harness. Easy to install plug-n-play into your tail lights, a ground wire and then running a wire to your battery.

U-Haul is the last place I would have install a hitch and wiring. I have never seen one of their shops that I would trust wiring a vehicle, especially one that had just come out. You are far better off doing it on your own. The instructions are fairly clear.

I would also go to Quadratec to get the parts. Call and talk to them, let them know that you are a member of the Wrangler Forum and they will give you a discount on most items (depends on brand). They have great customer service and will not blow smoke up your backside.

For the Curt 13392 2" receiver hitch and Curt 56407 wiring kit, there are links on their site to the instruction sheets so you can read over them before you purchase. A great help in many items in deciding whether it is something you can do. Not all items have the sheets, it depends on whether the manufacturer has the instructions available on their site.

I also did Quadratec for my 2018 JK and they made it very easy to install and it really looks like it is stock. I pulled jet ski around with it, no problems.

I purchased from Quadratec the CURT 13392 (without wiring since I don't plan to tow). Installation was very easy and as others have mentioned, I re-used two of the Jeep bolts. I installed the hitch so I could install my Yakima swing-away bike rack. I like that the hitch is tucked under the bumper so I don't bang my shins on it when loading stuff in the back. But I had to get an extender so the rack would clear the spare. I figure it's small inconvenience to install the extender when I need to use the rack.

Hitch install is super easy. 4 bolts. 10 minutes tops.

I used the UHaul wiring kit to splice into my rear lights. (I have standard halogen lights, otherwise a module is required) It's stupid cheap and works fine, but took me about 3 hours to wire up properly the way I like wiring done...IE all connections soldered, heat shrinked and all wire covered with slit loom. If you aren't confident in running wires you should pay for a plug'n play kit.

All in it cost me $75 to be set up to tow, vs what, $800 for the tow option?
