Hey everybody,

I've been looking at water-methanol injection systems to try and even out the gas mileage on my 2003 TJ 4.0 L. It is my daily driver and I put about 100-120 mi a day on it easily and was wondering if anyone knew anything about alcohol injection systems evening out power outputs and would it even be worth it to put one on to help with milage.

All Fuel Mileage improvement gadgets are nothing more than a scam for the sellers. Don't you think if there was a simple way to improve the MPG the auto manufacturers would use it. It's all Snake Oil. But I do have some shares of the Brooklyn Bridge I need to sell off.

You may want to look into water-meth injection. It has an actual place in performance applications, I'm not sure how well it will help with your mileage on a stock vehicle though. I have only seen it used in forced induction systems.

I agree with Atthehop. Everyone and their brother is coming out with scams that claim to improve mpg and you can safely consider them to be the modern day equivilents to snake oil sold by the old traveling "medicine men". :)

I do like the idea of your alcohol injection system, it seems easy to install and helps immediately. And I was looking at the water-meth injection, thats what I've been reading about and I haven't seen anything on stock vehicles either. Thats what i've really been wondering about. Add more power through a better compression ratio, sounds good to me.

Nothing like that is going to affect the compression ratio which can only be affected/changed by engine modifications... like different pistons, shaved head, crankshaft, etc.

The point behind alky injection is to cool the intake charge, that is why it is used on most forced induction cars.. I have a alky control system on my 01 turbo trans am and let me tell you out here they get $55 per 5 gallons of meth so not sure how much you would be flushing/saving anyway.. :D

I'll comment on this, no its not all "bull." Will it do anything in the situation you are considering, nope. There is no need to cool the intake charge. Does it have a place in forced induction vehicles, yes. I did some more looking and it really isnt going to help a stock vehicle. You would need to at least advance the timing and then it would be minimal with FI.

I'll comment on this, no its not all "bull."

Does it have a place in forced induction vehicles, yes.
The main reason we use water and/or methanol injection is to cool the intake charge, as stated above. On forced induction engines--particularly turbocharged ones--this allows us to run more boost than pump gas octane can accommodate. This injection (the liquid need not be flammable; even plain water will suffice) is designed to prevent detonation, which is lethal to an engine while running lots of boost. Note that you aren't injecting liquid all the while the engine is running. The system is controlled via a pressure switch, so the injection only happens when you approach or cross the threshold of danger (which will vary depending on your exact engine configuration).

This is why you have no need whatsoever for water injection if you're not turbocharged. Even if you are running a turbo, you still may not need it. For example, I never had to run water injection on my old turbo minivan, and my day-to-day boost setting was 19 psi since that was the max I could run on 91-octane without detonating. (If I wanted more, I would occasionally mix in some 100 octane fuel so I could turn it up to 24 psi. Some might say I could have gone with water injection, but it was more hassle to me than it was worth--high octane was quick and easy.)
