So, I've been having electrical problems in my 95 Jeep YJ and it has spent a lot of time in the shop because of them. The shop has managed to screw it up even more and I've been back several times to get it right. I picked it up last night and on the drive home (in the dark) I went to turn the heat on. Well, I noticed at that point that I couldn't actually see what the heck I was doing because there was no illumination behind the dash so I could see where "heat" was vs. "defrost" and such. I called the shop and they told me there was never any illumination there despite the fact that I've been driving the jeep for 10 years and I say that there was. So, for all the owners out there of 95 Jeep YJs, have I lost my mind or should the heat/selector area be illuminated???

Mine has never had a light there. Seems like there should be. I have had it out before a few times, and I can say for sure that on my 94 Sahara, there has never been illumination there.

I know this for a fact because when I got my YJ it was out. Pull the center dash bezel off and pull the HVAC controls out as far as they'll come (they'll catch on the cables, that's OK). On the end closest to the radio there's a light bulb that is one of the Chrysler favorite "twist-n-pull" bases. Twist it 1/4 turn and it'll probably fall out of your hands and down into the dash, LOL. After you fish it out you can pull the bulb out of the plastic base and replace it. Only lights up the words, not the blue/red stripes or levers, but at least you know where your hand is going. I'm thinking about getting a spare ashtray light from a junkyard and putting it above the HVAC controls so I can see the levers...and for those of you who want to wire more stuff into your dash lights (makes a nice trigger for foglights so they go on and off with the headlight switch), all the Chrysler dash lights run on the orange wire (hot) and black (ground). Hope it helps!

I happened to have my dash out yesterday, and I don't have lights in that heater switch assembly or the AC assembly. They never were there. Mine must be a factory fluke or something. I don't think much about it now. After all this time, I know where everything is.

Thanks guys. I know that damn thing had a light behind it for the past ten years and the shop is trying to tell me that I'm insane. Does anyone know if any of the manuals (like Chilton) has the wiring diagrams to show that little bulb in there?

I have a light there, but the plate is all black and the controls are printed over the block so nothing shines through. The only reason I know there's a light behind is because on the right side where the bulb is the black has worn off and I can see some light.
