Looking into buying a TJ in the near future and have some questions as to what to look for when buying. I am interested in a 4.0, 5 speed with the D44 rear. I have looked at the ones at Gary's Jeeps (www.garysjeeps.com) and the one's in my price range have a lot of miles. How many miles would I get out of a 4.0? Are there specific areas to look at on the Jeep? The Jeep would function as my daily driver and weekend warrior. I do not want to build it into a hardcore rig, just do a 5" lift and run some 33's or 35's, just enough to play around in. Thank you for all the help.

Hi there, I have about 75k on mine and it is still running strong, I run synthetic oil in every vehicle I have owned and it seems to help the engines. But It all depends on how the jeep has been treated by previous owners. A friend of mine had a YJ with the 4.2 and had to rebuilt the engine at 250k miles, but I have also heard horror stories at less miles. The 4.0 is a great engine but if it has been plaqued with abuse it will shorten it lifespan. I would take a look at the jeep in general to see how it was run. Usually dealers will hose off engines to make them pretty and to clean up oil leaks, but for the most part won't clean the undercarriage. I'm sure there are more suggestions to come. Good luck and congrats on your future wrangler.

A friend was pushing 300,000 before he had any real problem.

Thanks for the replies. Reason I asked about the mileage is I knew two guys with YJ's who had to replace their motors at 130k or so. I didn't want to buy a Jeep for $8000 and then have to put a motor in it right away.

What would the value be on a '97 or '98 with over 100k? Say, for this one:http://www.garysjeeps.com/current_sales/jeep112.htm

EDIT: I checked nada.com and the value for a '97 with 148000 is $7900 average retail. Does that seem fair?
