Anyone ever heard this done before ?

A friend of mine tells me putting a strong magnet on the bottom of your oil pan keeps metal shavings in the pan rather than them going back up into the engine.

Some after market companies also offer magnetized drain plugs as replacement options. Having worked on a few motors, shaving can/will collect on magnetized parts, but remember a lot of modern motors have aluminium blocks/components and those shavings will just keep circulating.

Best option is a high quality filter and regular oil changes.

^^^^ This ^^^^

And FWIW, I change my filter more often than the oil....Modern Synthetic oil lasts a long time, but the filter is more than likely to be in poor shape.
