Audio unit replacement

Hi guys. I want to replace my radio/nav uconnect unit in my 2013 My14 jk. I have been in three car audio shops and all of them told me when you put a new touch screen radio in the fading will not work. Because the Jeep software does not cope with that. Are there any audio units brands that do tolerate new devices without issues? Thanks

If you have a factory amp your current radio puts out a constant high speaker level output on rear channels only to the amp

Then over can bus digital messages from radio to amp adjust the volume balance and fade

The crappy aftermarket can adapters ain’t smart enough to do that and new radio cannot generate the digital signals so volume becomes just decreasing overall amplitude like when a song gets quieter and as factory amp has only 2 channel input no way to half ass the fade

What you could do is replace factory amp with one that accepts 4 channel input from new factory head unit and then fade would work but you have to have 4 pairs of audio wires from head unit to new amp so need to add 4 wires for front output

There are also many oem amps that don’t rely on can bus that accept 4 channel input and could easily be adapted

The Bose amp used in Mercedes ml of late 1990s has that input and six paired output including sub

The WJ jeep infinity amp has four speaker level input channels and 6 output channels

The Hyundai Azera has 4 speaker level inputs and 11 outputs include a pair of subs and a pair of tweeters and even a center channel
It sounds great with any quality headunit and is about $20 at a u pull it yard

Hi Digger. Thank you for this interesting information.
Hi Digger. Thank you for this interesting information.
I thought I had 6 speakers and a subW . Don’t I need a 6 channel input amp? Cheers
Speakers are amp output

The factory amp only has two channel input which are a high fixed volume speaker level output on rear channels only

If you look at the factory 22 pin harness plug only the two rear channels are populated with pins
Plus 2 can bus pins a ground and battery and probably a single antenna power wire this only 9 pins used in the gray connector

Pinouts can be seen at connectors.dcctools.com

Thank you for clarifying this! Appreciate this a lot!
FYI, the new Maestro module RR2 claims to retain fader control. I don't know how they are doing it or if they are even talking about the factory amp, it's just a detail I saw on an ad.

Yes.
Any head unit which is 100% compatible with the Idatalink Maestro can bus adapter will work fully and completely (including fade) with the factory amp.

That's correct. Any compatible head unit will have a special high speed datalink port on the back specifically designed for CanBus communications with the Maestro and the jeep

Thank you for that mate!
Thank you all again for your input. So when I just buy one of the compatible head units, I don’t have to buy anything else to make it work! I am not an ace here in car audio electronics :) Any preferences of head units? Looking for gps and reverse cam too. Thanks again!

Well.... you do need to buy the Maestro too. The problem is that aftermarket head units don't speak "jeep" so you need an interpreter between the jeep and the head unit so that the head unit can communicate with the jeep. That interpreter is the CanBus adapter, and in your case it will be the MaestroRR CanBus adapter.

Can't go wrong with Pioneer, Alpine or Kenwood for audio quality, but I'm partial to Kenwood because it also seems to deliver the best bang for the buck.
Just throwing this out there as I'm currently looking at it...the Stinger High 10 head unit can be mated up with a kit for our Jeeps that give it a very OEM appeal. Supposedly it retains all the controls and it's a plug and play system, but I'm just starting to dig into it. It's a bit pricey but here's the link

It's not completely compatible with the Factory premium sound. You can get it to work, but it sounds crappy. If you want to install that then you are probably better off scrapping the factory amp/subwoofer (if you have) and going completely aftermarket.
