Yes you don't need special tools or even air tools. It's an easy job.
I did one years back with basic tools and it wasn't too bad. The only thing I would suggest is that you have a bench vise to hold the carrier.

I did mine with all hand tools. I didn't have a vise to do the ring gear so I made something out of 2x4s held down with C-clamps on a bench to hold the diff case when torquing them back down. Other then that, it was all wrenches, ratchets, small crow bar and hammer.
So it's not that hat to get the ring off?

Not as long as you can hold the case. They are torqued to 80 ft-lbs just shy of what a lug nut is. My buddy and I thought we could hold it by hand. Neither one of us were as manly as we thought.
Thanks guys! Looks like I'm adding a bench vise and torque wrench to my Christmas list along with an Aussie locker!
No special tools required other than a torque wrench. Just read the directions well before hand; would have saved a buddy and I time getting it together in the carrier.

That IS a really great writeup! I'm still a little pessimistic - nearly everything I've read about autolockers is that they're not good for DD TJs. Too much noise, clicking, chirping, etc. I live in FL, the land of the U-Turn, so that's a concern. BUT, this isn't a project that I'll get to before next year, most likely. If installed in the front as in this example, safe to assume I'd still deal with the noise even when in 2WD?
I wouldn't worry bout the clicking. I live in Germany right now and my tj feels like a monster truck on some of these narrow streets. The clicking doesn't bother anything on my rig when I navigate on the streets here. To be quite honest it is rather funny to see the Germans looking at me like I'm driving on a front diff that's sounds like its gonna break:). You should be just fine driving there in Fl. You will barely hear it in 2wd when ur cruising. Only time I notice mine is in a parking lot, etc. if it clicks too loud I just turn up my radio!
