Several manufacturers make these.
Won’t they do more harm than good?
Any thing that gets in the axle tube is likely to flow back out, the remnants of which is EXTREMELY unlikely to do any damage.
Won’t these ultimately just hide a leaking inner seal resulting in more harm than good?

That is exactly the problem with outer axle tube seals. They may be fine in the rocks and desert but definitely not if you have mud or water crossing. I have seen the damage that can occur from using them and not checking your diff fluid frequently.
You are spot on. Crap, mud and water can get in when they start to wear but can’t drain back out and you won’t know it.
The inner Axle seals can be destroyed and you won’t know that either until you check the oil level.

Don't the seals prevent the gear oil from escaping? I don't have a lot of knowledge on Jeep axles, but the axle on our Class A motorhome has oil in the differential, and it flows out to the axle bearings for lubrication. We got caught in a flood a few years back and water got into the pumpkin, damaging the gears and the axle bearings. Not a lot of fun when you're on the road 1100 miles from home when the rear end starts spitting out all its oil!

The front seals are inner seals that are in the pumpkin just outside the carrier bearings, so there is no oil in the front axle tubes. The rear seals are at the end of the axle tubes and so the rear axle tubes have oil in them.

If water gets in it can't get out. I drilled and tapped bottom of tube for a plug on a D30 on a XJ. I would not use them again.
