I have the '89 running pretty well at the moment. I got the 4WD to work the other day, but now have a new issue. When I turn left (and not every time) something starts banging on the underside of the floor pan. The noise is coming from under the center or passenger site of the Jeep. It seems to be rythmic rather than random banging, as if it's something on the drive train. I can't see any obvious issues underneath. I know that the exhaust has a broken mount next to the transmission, but when I slam the exhaust around by hand it doesn't make the same noise that I hear when turning left. Other than that, it drives fine. I actually drove it around for quite a bit and it didn't make the noise until I took a sharp left yesterday with a big passenger with me. Since then, I can get it to do it without anyone else in the Jeep, but just can not figure out exactly what is hitting underneath. Thoughts?

If you have the 4.2 with Carter carb and impulse air system, it could easily b the air tubes that run between the engine and the wheel well on the passenger side. When I got mine the impulse air tubes were clanging against the frame, and under the floor board. Look down into the engine compartment for a tube about 1' in diameter and push it around. I bet it will rattle and clang.

Could be something like that. With the weight of a passenger over there is compresses the suspension just enough that something makes contact.

It will do it when cornering a little harder even if there is no passenger. The noise is loud, imagine someone hitting the underside of the tub with a hammer repeatedly...... I'm not so sure the hose would do it.

The part directly under the floor pan is a METAL tube and yes it can sound like someone is under there banging on the floor.

OK I have a 93 Jeep Wrangler and I am having the same problems. No problems in 2WD and 4WD drive works in forward motion however when making hard left turns. I get a loud banging noise as well. This is not a Metal hose banging or a rubbing of the tires. This noise sounds if some type of gear is repeatedly slipping or someone is hitting my right side front axle with a 12 lbs sledge hammer. In another post I read someone stated the below. Can anyone add to the validity of his claim.

"That is a common issue for new Jeepers that is easily prevented from happening... never shift into 4x4 while on a paved surface. In other words, stay in 2wd when you're on the street.

The Wrangler's 4x4 system is a "part-time" system that was not designed for use on paved streets. It was designed only for use when on loose slippery surfaces. Dirt, mud, rocks, snow, or ice.

Why does it cause the steering to jerk back & forth & make it feel funny when you shift into 4x4 (4Hi or 4Lo) on the street? Because the Wrangler's 4x4 system mechanically locks the front and rear axles together so the tires on both axles must rotate at exactly the same speeds/RPMs. The problem is that when you turn left or right, the front tires must rotate faster than the rear tires and being in 4x4 prevents that from happening which is why the steering feels funny... the front tires are fighting with the rear tires.

Only Jeeps like the Liberty, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee have optional "full time" 4x4 systems that can be used on the street.

The Wrangler's 4x4 system should not even be used on the streets when they are wet from rain. Even wet streets have too much traction for the Wrangler's part-time type of 4x4 system."

I have a 94 with the 2.5 and very similar problems so far I have discovered broken engine mount and right front shock is all leaked out which makes me think that bushings are worn out. I've ordered new set of shocks as a part cure next is total bushing replacement. That should do it. I hope. Let me know what you find, cause it could help me!
