I just replaced mine with a new one. I talked with my people at O'Rielys and she told me that unless I would be doing some extreme wheeling and winching the optima was just spending extra money. She sold me an american made 2 year full replacement with 4 more years prorated for less than 100 bucks. Optima is made in mexico.

Wow how things change. I bought an Optima red top for my Cutlass a good while ago (thinking its been 5 years now). Was made in the USA and has been a great battery (car doesn't get driven much...spends a LOT of time sitting without a tender on it). Still cranks like new. But doing a bit of research, they've been steadily moving production to Mexico since 2000 and as of a year or two ago moved all production down there. And apparently quality has gone down considerably at the same time. :(

Guess I'm gonna pass on the Optima from here on out...

What KIND of battery you buy is much less an issue than HOW you intend on using it. If you want it to sit around a long time and start "whenever"......buy a good quality "regular" battery and keep a trickle charger on it ( a solar charger if it sits outside).

If you are gonna use the jeep as a DD, almost ANY battery will get you what you want. Batteries LOVE to be used........ the more you use them, the longer they will last.

Using batteries "off road" or in very bumpy situations can cause early failure due to internal plate distortion/breakage and/or plate shorting due to material dislodging and/or sulfation accumulation. If you do ALOT of offroading, consider the Optima style battery for longevity sake or have a backup battery on hand.

If you are just wanting to use a WINCH on a regular basis, you MAY want to consider switching to a "dual battery" system, where you are using one battery for your vehicle and one for your winch system....setting it up so you can charge one or the other or both. This kind of system tends to prevent the "getting stranded" due to killing of single battery. Any good off road/RV shop could show you how to do this or do it for you.

Awesome guys thanks. Yes I saw that about mexico but wasnt sure how accurate it was. I think ill go for the duralast then since I cant seem to find any die hards in stock around me. I need it asap since my jeep is sadly sitting in a pile of snow with no juice... Wont even take a jump.

If I were you I'd go with the Die Hard Platinium, it's a Absorbed Glass Mat battery just like an Odessey but at nowhere near the cost. Unfortunately for us up here SEARS got out of the automotive parts/repair business and sold all the rights to third party companies, basically making the Platinium very difficult and expensive to get. I have one of those made in MEXICO Red Top Optima's, so far even in -40 celsius weather it starts like a charm.
