I bought a YJ last summer and it came with a non-standard antenna - long, floppy and obviously a universal model from an auto parts store. It was so floppy it would smack the windshield frame as I was driving.

I look at the wrangler specific models and they have a bracket that bolts onto the fender. Mine didn't have any holes for such a bracket so I just bought a smaller aftermarket antenna (maybe 16-18" long) that fit the same universal bracket that came with it.

Unfortunately, the smaller antenna gives me poor reception. So I was wondering if I need an in-line filter of some kind to make it work - or does the larger stock model work better?

How is the stock bracket bolted on? Can I use self tapping sheet metal screws or do I need to find a good backer somehow?

TIA
