I have an 05 lj with the 6 speed. I am getting ready to make a 2000 mile trip and wonder whats the mest rpm or speed to get the best gas milage. I know its a jeep but i have gotten it at 23mpg but i was past by everything even a hybrid at 62-63. I lookled at the forum but nothing and wondered if anyone perfected the optimum speed or rpm. I have 3.73 gears.

For me with the 6cyl and 5 speed, it's best when I keep it around 1500/1800 RPMs. Depending on your set up, you may not be able to do that and maintain highway speeds.

Going somewhere fun ?
Whereever your going, I wish you safe / fun travels.

Whatever you were doing to get that 23mpg....do that :) You won't see any better than that unless it's down hill with a tailwind drafting a semi.

You have to do the math and decide what's more important...saving a few hours or saving some gas. Driving 65 instead of 60 saves you 3 hours but uses $50 more in gas ($380 vs $330) going off an average of $3.80/gal and 20mpg vs 23mpg.

I dunno about rest of country but right now gas is right at $3 here in SC. So his cost difference could be even less.

I drive a jeep,,, pay attention to gas prices? It might raise my eyebrow if gas gets above 4.25... 35 years ago gas was at around 75 cents a gallon.. I make about 10 times what I made then, so the cost of my gas has actually gone down, when compared to my personal GDP ... LOL. Honey Badger just doesn't give a ^*%^!!

Top gear with the lowest speed and rpm without lugging. This not lugging counts for constant cruising not acceleration. This best spot will probably lug if you are going up a hill. For me this combo occurs around 45 mph but i need to go at least 50 mph to not need to shift for hills.

I find my best gas mileage is when I keep it between 1700-2200 rpm's on the hiway, and 800-1400 rpm's around town. with these rpm's on the hiway I am doing around
56-63 mph, and 30-43 mph, respectively. Somewhere around 16-19 mpg.
I have dana 35's with 3:08 gears, an 33x12.5x16 Bridgestones

everyone's Jeep outside of stock is going to be different depending on set up. I have 3.73 gear auto w/ 33's/12.50. 2k rpm holding at 55 to 60 with OD off the engines runs smooth with no lugging.

Have you replaced your speedometer gear with the correct one to accurately see how fast you're going?
