I have an 87 YJ that I am swapping out the old 4.2 carbureted motor for a fuel injected 4.0

I believe that there are models of the ones I have listed below that came with a 4.0s.

What would be the best and what would be the worst choice as a source for what will work/fit in my 87 YJ Wrangler engine bay ( be the least/most hassle)?

I have them in random order below - what order would you put them in (First being best, last being worst)? Any comments about why you see it your way would also be greatly appreciated.

Least hassle would be a 90-91 YJ...would bolt up to everything, even your transmission/clutch etc. Best would be a 94-5 YJ w/ complete tranny/bellhousing/Tcase. You'd have to swap clutch master & speedo set up. (along w/ all the elctronics/fuel pump/EFI stuff).

At least that's what I've seen from write ups.

any thing 2000 on, they hard bad heads at less 2000 did.

the carbed motor has the fuel pump on the side of the block, and the fuel injected motor has an electric pump in the tank. if you are going with a 4.0, you will need to buy an electric pump and mount it somewhere inline between the tank and the engine. some aftermarket kits have the filter and pump in one unit, but they are in the neighborhood of 4-500 dollars for a good quality pump. I have an '87 and weighed the options of how much it was going to cost me to "upgrade" to a newer style injected motor, and ended up going with the new long block crate motor. kept the original 4.2L. final tally it ended up being almost $1000 cheaper to put the new motor in than going to the 4.0

you can just put fuel injection the 4.2, (howell, mopar or junkyard) unless it is in bad shape

if you are going to swap, stick with a YJ
cherokee and comanche will work but all the accessories are mounted different
TJ and LJ are OBDII which could be a wiring hassle to get everything working right

KJ = no 4.0
