Which engine is better a 22re or 2.5 amc?
a better question 22re or I6 4.0L

you're talking about two indestructible engines, but if its a matter of the better of 2 4cyl engines... i dont have much experience with the 2.5 but my old 22re I could literally bang with a sledge and it would run.

If you're tossing it in a jeep, I just say the 2.5 amc. You'll find more transmissions that will bolt right in, or use your existing.

I believe the AMC 150 might be slightly more powerful too.

Either way, you probably won't make a wrong decision. Both reliable engines. My grandfather drove his toyota pick up (with a 22re) until 245,000 until he decided he didn't need a truck. The engine had more miles left in it, body didn't though.

The 22RE is definatly a great and reliable engine. Toyota guys live by them, and I cannot tell you how many I see on the local trails that are turning 38"+ size tires with the 22RE and very low t-case gears.

However the AMC/Jeep 2.5L to me has also proven to be a very reliable, and IMO has a little more low end torque.

I havent had any experience with the 22RE but my old 2.5 was a beast. I beat the piss out of it for 30k before i traded up. Never gave me one mechanical problem, all it did was ask for more abuse.

Chrysler 2.5's are junk....I have bought 10 jeeps in the last year with blown up 2.5's in um. If you look at the price of engines for jeeps, the 2.5 costs twice as much to replace as a 4.0.
I really think that's a pretty rough statement. A well maintained AMC 2.5 will go the distance.

Regardless, I still think either one is a good choice.

Sorry but I disagree simply because I have had enough jeeps to make a professional opinion. If you had to swap out as many as I have and seen as many holes in the block as I have seen, I'm sure your tune would change.

The other reason I say that is the cost of used engines. Around here a used 2.5 with 150K on it will still bring 900 dollars. I have seen them upwards of 1500 bucks..whereas a 4.0 with 80K on it is only worth about 500-700. That tells me there is more demand for the 2.5's. And the only reason for the demand is that they blow up more often.

I have only heard good things about the 2.5.

As for demand, it can also be tied to supply which would indicate that there aren't many 2.5's that end up on the used market.

Reason for the demand ofthe 2.5 is that people know they will get another 100K out of one with 150K. Pete is right, nobody needs to get rid of them ever since they are bulletproof!

i have 250,000 miles on my 2.5 amc and all it does is ask for more abuse by far the bette engine. if u dont run it without oil itll run forever

my last wrangler had the 2.5 and i beat the ever living crap out of it.....for about 10k miles (it already had over 150k)

then it took a shit on the way wheeling. thank god it blew up on the road and not in the forrest.....had a hole in the block about the size of a baseball..

i have moved on to the beastly 4.2

If the 2.5 you speak of is one and the same as the wrangler motor then you cant possably be comparing it to a toyota motor with a strait face. You couldnt melt one down and pour it on me. Go with the toyota motor or a 4.0. I got 3 different friends with 2.5s in there jeeps and they (all) have had problems. My 4.0 has 177000 and counting not a problem besides a rear main seal. I have an uncle a cousin and a good friend with toyota trucks and my uncles truck has 300000 plus miles my cousins has 340000 plus and my friends has 360000 plus. Got another buddy with one also but his only has 200000 on it and for a toyota 4 banger that doesnt even qualify as high millage. Dont even entertain the idea of a 2.5 if the amc is the same as the crystler 2.5 wrangler motor. POS period!

Many people say that the 2.5l is just the 4.0l with two lopped off cylinders.
