I have had my TJ for just about 3 weeks now and upgraded the tires this weekend. I went with BFG AT's, 30x9.5 and so far love them. My question is this, what psi should I be running these at? The guy I bought them used from says 50psi, which is stamped on the sidewall. The place that mounted the tires said 35psi should be good. The TJ sees pavement duty for about 90% of the time. Any feedback would be great.

I run a little bigger BFG and keep 'em aired up at 40-50. Anything less on the road feels too squishy.

If you are looking for maximum life out of your tires, the way to get the right pressure is to make sure the entire tread is making contact with the ground. To do this, make a chalk line on a front and rear tire. Then drive in a straight line for a couple hundred yards on smooth pavement. Check the lines, if the outside of the line is worn and not the middle, you need more air, if the middle is gone, and not the outside, you need less air. You will find that you need different air pressures in the front and back, most likely. Good luck, and welcome to the Jeep madness!

I have 33in MTRs and run them at 26-28lbs to get good contact on road. So far they are wearing better then I thought.

40-50 will give you a rough ride. i run mine at 30 psi

Well keep in mind the psi stated on the tire is the max COLD pressure. Follow the advice above but also try different pressure to see what works for you. I have found that 5-10lbs less than the side wall works well for most tires for on road use. As for off road. some where in the range of 15-20 psi should be decent with those tires depending on the trail.

Thanks guys. It just seemed odd to me that off-road tires would take more psi then the ones on my old sportscar. I will play with the air and see what works.

I run my 35" Baja Claws at around 30 on the road. I messed around with pressures while air up for a few months and found that 30 gave me the best ride and mileage. Off road however I would hate it at 20. I run around 8 or so in the rocks and no more than 12-15 if doing anything else.

Stock 05 TJ runs 29 with that size tire.

I run BFG AT's at 30psi. If you run anything high, yes the tires will last longer, BUT very little surface of the tire will come in contact with the road(hence less tire wear) so your chances of getting into an accident increase because of the reduced traffic. 30psi is fine for me. Rotate every 3000 for even wear and keep the psi right and they will last. That is a 50,000 mile tire. Keep an eye on the wear, my alignment was off so that caused my fronts to show wear at 22K. The guy at my tire store gave me credit for the unused miles towards two new tires since I always purchased tires from him, so I lucked out this time and I watch the alignment bigtime now.

I run the BFG A/T 30x9.50's on my wifes TJ, and, the 33x10.50's on my 99TJ at 28 psi, with very even tread wear on both.

i have some bfg tko 31x10.5 r15x8 on a 96 bronco and i run them at 35 psi in rear 33 psi in front and rotate them every 5kmiles and i have about 66k miles on them and they all have even tread wear, granite it is about time to change them though.
