Hey all

Just need to pick your brains about something quick. I have a 2010 Wrangler JKU with about 21000km on it. I always get my Oil changed around the 4000 to 4500km marker whether or not the change oil light comes on. Lately the change oil light has been coming on around the 4000km marker and the guy changing my oil commented that my oil was as black as the night. We looked at the oil and was super black with some small particulars in it, which I was told was just "engine gunk". They wanted to flush my engine but I didn't have the time.

Anyone else run into this problem? Is it the oil? The Gas? The Jeep???

Please let me know

I change mine every 3,000 miles and the oil looks like dark honey - not even close to black.

Did the guy that drained the oil switch your used oil with some darker oil so you would buy a flush? :confused:

Oil color isn't always a good indicator of the condition of the oil. Black oil for example can still have life remaining, and honey colored oil can be bad, or vice versa. Follow a sensible OCI, and if you have doubts about the condition of the oil, or suspect a problem, such as excess metal, fuel, or coolant, send it off to a lab that does oil analysis. What a mechanic at a shop tells you about the condition of your oil should not be taken a Gospel. Usually they are trying to sell a flush or additive to make more money. I'd suggest you follow the severe service interval in your owners manual.

They are trying to scam you, I do believe. Use mobil one and change it every 5000 miles along with filter and you will be fine. They probably have a jug of black crud down under to show the customer to intimidate you into a flush job!

That sucks.
Op- check it yourself, I would be shocked if some place tried to pull something like that on me :(

One thing so many of drivers have forgotten is checking their engine oil OFTEN. I know neighbors who have never openned their hoods! In the old days, no one filled up without checking the oil it seemed.

Today with all the improvements in technology we have skipped a lot of the basics like oil checks, air pressure and the like.......I check my engine ALL OVER every time I wash my vehicles. I actually wash and clean my engine compartment too.

I open hoods a minnimum of a couple times a week....just to check. I also get down on the ground and do a "look-see"...,...........old school I know.

If you do this you know the condition of fluids......I got 'scammed' once by a gas station......(long story).....I was 21 and it was 1967.....NEVER again.

Get an oil analysis kit from Blackstone Labs and send it in. That will give you the details you want to know about the condition of the oil and the internals of your engine. You remove the diagnosis and opinions that are not objective.

There are still some scammers out there that keep a bucket of sludge on hand to show customers and you may have found one of them. Another possibility is that the place uses the cheapest oil they can find and it sucks. The first thing I would do is take it to a different shop for your next oil change and make sure before you take it in that they use a good oil that they are pouring in from a bottle. A lot of places will buy one drum of good oil when they open and have it refilled with the cheapest crap they can buy once it's empty. The customer thinks they are getting good oil when they are getting junk. The really bad deal here is that if you have an engine problem during the warranty period and the place that changes your oil doesn't use an oil that meets the API spec for your engine you are SOL and won't know it until it's too late.

Change it yourself and know for sure.

+1. At least pull the dipstick before you drive in for your oil change, and check the oil color. Then, when (if) they bring you the sample of tar, you can look them right in the eye and make 'em feel like what they are, scum.
One thing, I drive only 5 miles to work, and my old truck's oil will get black in a 3,000 mile cycle. Maybe from always running rich during warm-up?

The oil in my DD turns very black in 3000 miles as well, but it's got nearly 400k miles on it. If I had a tenth of that mileage and it was turning black I would be looking for a reason why.

Hell I use Mobil 1 in my Hyundai with 200k on it. The oil comes out looking slightly darker than when it went in and i change it about every 7-10k miles depending on how I'm feeling. But as others have said. I think they are scamming you.

Synthetic oils weren't widely available when I passed the 200k mile mark, but if they had been I may have considered one of them. I doubt it would have made much difference at this point. Regardless of oil type I wouldn't be disappointed with how long it lasts at the mileage I'm at.

Is that another quick lube place or dealer trying to scam you with the "engine flush". I would never believe it.

Awesome thanks for the input. I had my questions about it because normally I get my vehicle serviced at the dealership and they have never said anything, but because I was in a hurry I stopped at a Mr. Lube. I know they have a history of trying to sell you extras but the engine oil on the dipstick was super black so I thought I would ask...glad I didn't fall into that trap. I will keep an eye on it myself and try to get it into the dealership from now on.

+1. Many of these places include only 4 quarts of oil with their oil change and that's how many they put in no matter what kind of car it is. I've seen them do it on a Powerstroke diesel that is supposed to get three or four times that amount.

There is a good reason they call the place Mr Lube. . . . .
If that was the reason they called it that it would be called Mr. Dry with a Barbed and Splintered Telephone Pole.

Guess my sarcasm was missed.

One can only hope Mr. Lube is super greasy when he is putting it to you while robbing your wallet.

I got yours, but think you missed mine. I thought you meant they would give it to you in the tailpipe with lube. I think they'll do it dry and with exceptional vigor.
