Hello everyone first post, may be a bit long but desperate for some advice.

1997 Wrangler 2.5L Automatic

Changed the transmission, started and ran prior to changing it. 3rd transmission, first one pump busted, second one from Advance was a shawdy rebuild, so this is one they sent us from the warranty claim. Replaced the radiator and intercooler as well.

-Put everything together filled the fluids, Crank no start fault.

-Replaced the Crank Sensor just as a shot in the dark, the one on it was still new. Same fault

-Noticed the 11 fuse was blown, replaced and it blows when you turn the ignition, does not have to crank to blow it

-Tore out and ran 90% of the wiring harness, from the driver side O2 sensor, CPS over the junction on passenger side at large black connector, all the way back to the plug in the rear gas tank area, seen no clear issues, only wiring left to go through is the passenger side junctions and leading up to the computer. Also checked the wiring at the fuse block outside.

-Replaced the coil pack as a shot in the dark, same fault

-Disconnected everything from the plug to the rear harness, transfer, transmission, computer, crank sensor, even the two large(1 gray, 1 black) connectors on the firewall. Plugged them up one at a time to see when it would blow the fuse.

In order of being plugged up:
1. Computer all 3 connections - did not blow fuse
2. 2 large connectors on firewall - did not blow fuse
3. Crank positioning sensor - did not blow fuse
4. Connector on driver side of transmission, circular connector 3 prong sensor on trans - did not blow fuse
5. Connector on the back of the transmission, just above the trans pan - blowed the fuse

Any assistance or maybe something I can test or try to fix this thing would be greatly appreciated. My sons jeep, he needs to get to work and school and needs to stop driving my truck XD.

So went back outside and just wanted to narrow things down. Unplugged the small connector on the back side of the trans, just above the oil pan(Torque converter solenoid?) plugged everything else up and the jeep starts and runs.

Any advice from here?

Fuse 11 on 97 provides power to
PCM
Torque converter clutch solenoid
AC compressor clutch
Daytime running light module
Evap/purge valve solenoid
ASD relay
Fuel pump relay
Rear window defogger

As you worked on Tranny my guess is TC clutch solenoid or its harness
Try unplugging that then see if ign on still pops fuse

This is exactly where I am at with it. As long as I don't plug up the clutch solenoid it will start and run. Does shoot me the code to my computer for the clutch solenoid.

I have currently ran every part of the harness up to the firewall, and there are plenty more wires to check there to see if I have a short.

Can anyone tell me exactly where the wires that go to and from the clutch solenoid originate and terminate at?

And which part of the harness they travel through?

Like I said earlier been through 90% of the harnesses and working the last 10% as an overall with not direct attention to any one wire. I have not found any issues with any of the wires as of yet.

Would like to add the first transmission we bought, the solenoid wires were crushed between the trans filter and housing. I am really hoping I don't have to replace this damn thing again.

If unplugging the torque converter lock up solenoid connector eliminates the short that tells me the wire (red/light green) is shorted to ground at the pass through connector or further inside the trans.



If that connector is damaged you will have an almost impossible time finding one unless whoever you got the trans from will make it good. Maybe from another trans with a good one in it. Several guys have posted here & elsewhere looking for them, most apparently without finding any. Otherwise something will probably have to be rigged up.
