My wife ,in-laws and myself went for a very easy trail ride this weekend. We stayed in Bridgeport, CA. My father-in-law has a book of Cali trials and we decided to take one. We left out at the north end of town on the Bridgeport/Mason Rd on what was described as a 3 1/2 hour trip through some old mine areas that would eventually lead to Bodie, CA. There are a series of roads through this area of BLM land. Some graded, some not and some 4wd spurs along the way. The weather was perfect and the views were amazing. Along the way we met a group of jeeps from Selway, NV and had the typical jeepers break/BS session. They were all very friendly and we exchanged numbers for future rides. Any way this trip ended up taking 7 hours wiht a lot of stops for pics, lunch and the tour of Bodie. It was a blast.

Old mines are cool. Did you all go into any of the mine shafts at all?

Bum deal. We recently checked out a mine off of one of the trails we run and it was pretty cool. Got in about 200 yards and turned out the flashlights and that was the darkest of dark I have ever seen.

There are a ton of mines that are still open near Calico out here in southern Cali. They're not hard to get to at all, but bring a couple of flashlights and a bunch of chem lights to mark your backtrail once you go in. It's nothing like cavediving, but it's still fun.

sounds creepy. :D
It can be kinda creepy, especially since alot of the mines we found have bats in them. They don't pay any attention to you even when you shine your lights right on them, so they're not really anything to be concerned about. Around dusk is pretty cool......they all start coming out of the shafts and catching bugs to eat right in front of you. I'm gonna try to borrow a buddy's video camera and get some footage when we go to Calico next month when I get out of the desert doing field exercises. :)

Cool photos! the Bodie ghost town is always a place I've wanted to check out. Does anyone know how hot it gets there during the summer?
