I am new owner of wragler YJ 1995, bought in june . i know nothing about jeep, but i have passion. I bought in 1500 plus spend 200 for tow from another city. rusty but not bad, bought as is on some ones word.. when |I took this jeep to mechanic , emmisiion passed right a way. but when mechanic lifted, he said its not worth a dime to spend on it.
he given a list of things needs to change.
1) windshild need s to replaced
2)all breaks and rotors,
3)hole in tub needs to fix.
4)all exhaust system.
5) rear track bar mount is rusted and track bar is off from the axle.needs to fix
6)door handles, window kranker, u bolts as they r rusted badly.
7) all shocks, leaf springs r in good shape.
8) power steering gear box seal is leaking.
and little more things , like little hole in fender, body etc etc.
now i am in position @ zero thougths.
he said it will be another two grand or so to fix, which is not worth.

engine is 2.5 lit, 200000km four by four works, clutch is ok, trany is good.

any comments will be appreciated. please reply and advice its is worth or not. or any positive, negative feed back to start building it(restoring)
I can hold it till next year, and spare money in my pockets 100-200 dOLLARS EVERY MONTHS.

First let me say welcome. As the jeep goes it is what you make it. The list of
stuff he said needs to be fixed or replaced is long but each one on the list by
its self would be a small thing. If your like me you cant just go out and by a
nice ready to wheel jeep when you want too. But you did get one. Now you
can make it yours start at the top of the list and work your way down and clean and paint things as you go. A project thats my favorite part of jeeping
all the little projects to do.

so youll have a wrangler thats worth around 3-4k in my area of the country after your done spending 2k on it, dosent sound to bad really i can tell you i have done and seen much worse buddie.

i assume you didnt buy it to MAKE money, this really dosent sound all that bad, dont listen to that mechanic he obviously dosent understand your feelings for the car and is also a bit inconsiderate if you ask me....

i wanted to also add that the wrangler platform is the best investment ive ever made as far as cars go, you dont see much loss on upgrades you do to them if any at all.

You can find shocks, door handles, window parts, etc. pretty cheap on craigslist that are good. I sold some shocks I bought after a year bc new ones came with the lift and as they have said everything is a pretty small fix if you know your way around the jeep and if not it will be a good learning experience. The only things that you would have to have someone do would probably be the exhaust and window. Oh and the mechanic probably doesnt own a jeep, so trust me its worth it!

thanks to all who reply and given me boost, after reading all feedback , I start working on it. IT PASSED EMMISION FIRST TIME.
I BOUGHT ALL BREAKS,ROTORS,DRUMS AND ALL FOUR SHOCKS. I HAVE NO PLANNING TO LIFT THIS YEAR, LET IT BE ROLL ON THE ROAD SO THAT I WILL GET SOME CONFIDENCE,ABOUT ENGINE AND TRANY.
THE ALL PARTS I BOUGHT ARE ALMOST 500 DOLLARS INCLUDING TAX. FRO A LOCAL PARTS WAREHOUSE. AND WILL START INSTALLING WITH THE HELP OF MY FRIEND ON COMMING WEEKEND.

ANY FEEDBACK STILL BE HELPFULL IN FURTHER RESTORATION.

Welcome... you can remove the trac-bar.. you don't need it. You can find most parts new or used on line. Get a few catalogs such as 4wd.com and quadratec.com.. look for what you need, and then see if you can find it for a better price.

these wranglers are great cars to learn mechanics on, do the work yourself, save your money you would of spent on a mechanic and buy tools and hand cleaner, youll thank yourself later.

As other have said you have made a good investment. MY girlfriend recently bought a 95 yj. 5in lift 33's 4.10 gears' 4.0l hardtop locker, jasper create motor for 3k. NOt a bad price. but the jeep was a little rougher then we orignally thought.

Thing we knew it needed when bought
-Rad
-Exhaust
-Radio

Thing it needs after deep look.
-Skid plate (rotted out)
-Header(cracked)
-o2sensor
-hardtop seals
-Tail light wiring needs redone
-Steering colum is all messed up( blinker switch,horn, clock spring)
-Shock,steering stab
-rust repair on body.

This is all stuff that even after close look on test drive i have missed cause i didnt have a chance to put it on the lift.

after everything is done we will prolly have another 1k 1.5k in the jeep. but ill upgrade things to make them better and what i/she wants. if you can do most of the work your self it will save you money and is a good teaching lesson.

Thank you all , for reply. I think you guys r right instead of giving money to mechanic, i can buy tools. Localy mechanic charge almost 80bucks per hour.

This weekend me and my friend will start installing breaks and shock.
So that we will run for safety,

Glad to hear you are going to go at it ur self. You will not regret it at all. You can only gain knowledge. A repair mainual is ur friend. Just take your time and use your head.

I don't think that I would have too much faith in what this mechanic is telling you. If your entire exhaust system needs to be replaced, either you have very lenient emission standards or your mechanic doesn't know what he is talking about.

Remember the say "Its a Jeep Thing". Your starting to learn the meaning of it now. I bought mine thinking it needed a valve cover gasket and differential gasket. Turns out it needed a radiator all new coolant hoses heater hoses thermostate and gasket waterpump new catilytic converter new exhaust manifold rebld the t-case shocks brakes. I knew nothing about mechanics until i bought my jeep, a haynes repair manual, and the part and tools i needed to do the jobs. I liked my jeep before but now i love it its got my blood and sweat into it, kind of feels like it became a part of me now. I wouldnt trade it for anything not even a 04 cobra.

As you do your project, keep us updated and take pictures. We love pictures and personally I love to see the before and after pictures of projects.

I had sor of the same situation. We had bought my jeep not knowing anything about jeeps let alone cars. lol When we got mine and took it to a mechanic he said the same thing, it wouldnt be worth it. But being it was my first vehicle i wanted to stick with it. We replaced the engine, syncranisers in the tranny, clutch thermostat, exhaust system, starter, alternator, carburator, water pump, radiator Hoses And etc. It was a very long process but its worth it man. I guarentee it. Good luck!

I appreciate you , for all your time and inputs,
as some one advice to take pictures , will definate take some.
I can't wait till weekend, when we will start working on it. It will be my first efforts in my life to start doing mechanically. I SAVED SOME PICTURES/DIAGRAMES FROM MORRIS4x4 JEEP WEBSITE. SO THAT IT WILL BE EASY TO UNDERSTAND EACH PART BEFORE WE INSTALLED..

i have the same issues with my 95 that I just got on saturday...I knew it wasnt in prestine condition, but on the way home it over heated on me..spent sunday replacing the thermostat10 bucks, and water pump 25 bucks, tearing out carpet, finding out my soft top is in HORRIBLE condition and dont even have a rear right window....I've wanted a jeep forever and quick lesson ive learned that these are very simple vehicles which is great!! and for 35 bucks for a thermostat and water pump...dont give up and one part at a time!!

Hey Harry, first off, welcome to the group!

Can you say where you're located?

One thing you might do is find a local Jeep club and get to know some of the local Jeepers. There will be folks that will have a ton of knowledge and who knows, maybe even someone who would be willing to come and give you a hand.

Don't be afraid to look at wrecking yards for your parts. You can save a ton of cash on some things by buying used.

Keep a good though, and keep plugging. If you ask, folks on here may be able to help steer you towards good places to buy parts and save a buck while you're at it.

most auto parts stores like pep boys have u-bolt kits in the correct grade for about 8 bucks, had to buy one last night.
