I've been trying to locate the source of a rattle when going over bumps in my jeep. Rattle comes from the back. After trial and error on everything from the rear bumper to the exhaust, I believe the rattle is coming from the rear brake pads. I can move them with my finger and they make a metallic rattling sound. Sound is not there if I apply the brakes while going over a bump.
I'm going to replace the pads anyway and the thicker new pads should quiet this rattling as it wasn't there when I bought it. Likely the old pads are worn thin. But they are not thin enough to hit the wear indicators. However, I noticed something different about the front and rear pads. The fronts have a thin shim between the back of the pads and the caliper. The front pads are tight and dont move. The rear pads don't have this shim and are loose in the caliper. Both inner and outer on left and right sides. Are they supposed to have the shim in the back? Should I buy some and install with the new pads? No other vehicle I've had has had a shim there.
