My brakes are locking up while driving in traffic! I just put an Ls2 and T56 tranny and was wondering about the extra weight could be causing this. It made a 363 mile trip on the highway with no problem. In town it seems as if the brakes get hot! The right front tire actually locked up. I took it to the car wash to cool it off and I made it home. I also have long tube headers and I thought the brake lines could be getting hot from the headers. Everything seems to be hidden pretty well and away from the headers. I am at a loss, Has anybody had this problem before?:mad:

i would say that you need to get the calipers re adjusted, they may be too close to the hub, idn though, im no expert at all

You can't adjust calipers. If the brakes were ok before, you've probably got a stuck caliper, as in a stuck piston.

More weight makes them less likely to lock up.

i have seen the e brake lock up (not on a jeep), and if you give it a whack with the hammer it is okay

maybe the same is true for the caliper

it could also be a collapsed brake hose. a hose or stuck caliper will both do that. the fluid becomes trapped at the caliper. as the pads ride on the rotor it heats up, the fluid heats up, the fluid expands causing more application of the pads, etc...it will compound until you lock it up. look for abnormal discoloration of the caliper - usually a sign of it riding and getting too hot.

Thanks, I thought it might be a hose also. I was going to tackle it this evening I will tell yall what I find.:)

does it make noise or soemthing like dragging? could be frozen bolt or something that got stuck. It will cause the frozen brake pads to wear unevenly.. one side would retract while the other wouldn't..

It was a bad caliper and it totally messed up the rotor also. I guess it time to upgrade the brakes. Anybody have any recomendations on this. I know willwood and Bear and brembo.But I don't think we need formula 1 style braking systems on our jeeps. Do we? As for the pics of the toys I will post as soon as I can. I am on a buisness trip for the next two weeks and will also post pics of the jeep with the LS2.

There is an upgrade for jeep brakes. If you got big tires and a heavy V8 up front you need bigger brakes. Here are the best ones around.

Vanco Brakes

The guy who helped develop it (and many other great Jeep products) is banned from this site. But you can run into him on other Jeep related forums and question him. He goes by the screen name of "mrblaine".

I agree with the Vanco Big Brake kit being about the only worthwhile brake uprade available for the TJ. Here's my writeup on it... http://www.jeepforum.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=152&cat=54

And it sucks that mrblaine was banned here... Blaine (mrblaine) is a great person and technical resource. He just won't put up with fools who don't have a clue. :)

yes LS2 . I was at the SEMa show a couple of years back and saw a TJ with a viper V10. I got bitten by the bug to put a v8 in my jeep. So I went with the Ls2. 400hp and mid 300 tq it moves pretty well .I am still having instrument cluster issues. I purchased new guades from dakota digital and installing them in a custom guage pod i made out of aluminum. I plan on being the first jeep in the 11s at the race track! Just kidding. :)

thats sick. how much would a swap like that cost and how many headaches did you run into?

The cost, Well I got a pretty good deal. I have had a lot of work done by this friend of mine on most of my cars from mild to wild he mostly does vettes and other GMs. He charged me 5500.00 and I already had the motor and tranny. I was very labor intensive custom exhaust and tunning. Not to mention drive shafts and fuel system motor mounts and other things I cant think of . It was worth it in the long run ! I hope this helps. The shop he works for is in Houston and he did this on the side.
