My 2013 Sport Unlimited is making a "whistling" noise when I depress the brake pedal first thing in the morning when I start it up after it sitting all night. The noise goes away quickly and does not happen again until the next morning after it has sat all night. Thoughts? Here's a link to a short (45 second) video - - - https://youtu.be/R_FosFEjAMY

Rotors can rust overnight and cause some noise the first couple of times you use the brakes.

Tomorrow morning, take a peek at the rotor and see if there is surface rust on it. I'd also check to make sure your brake pads have plenty of life left in them, but I'm betting if it only happens first thing in the morning, it's just surface rust on the rotors.

I have two questions...

1) Are you moving in the video posted? If not, I can't imagine surface rust would cause that noise - as it sounded more in the cabin than from the wheel well.

2) If, after your Jeep sits overnight, is your brake pedal hard when you get in (before you start it)? Meaning - is it hard to push?

I haven't watched the video.

Are you thinking leaking brake booster?

I'm going to lunch in a few minutes. I'll watch the video and see what I think.

I was really just taking a shot in the dark initially!

Okay, after watching the video, scratch the rust idea.

I do agree that it sounds vacuum related.

Can you feel the noise in the pedal? Just trying to rule out a mechanical noise. It could very well be a leaking brake booster.

I don't really notice any "feel" when the noise happens, the brake pedal feels "normal". I'm going to guess that rules out mechanical, so it's probably vacuum related. I'll swing by my local shop sometime soon and see if they can confirm that. I'll post an update when I know something more.

Thanks for the help!

That will wake you up in the morning :jawdrop:

Please let us know if you decide to use your Jeep dealership for diagnosis and service--we'd be happy to get involved.

My 2012 JKU does the exact same thing.
Has that vacuum/whistle sound on cooler mornings.
I never took it in since it's out of warranty.
I just hope my brakes don't suddenly fail me one day.

My 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is doing the exact thing!! Exact noice and everything. Dealer thinks its the diaphram leaking, causing a vacuum issue. They want $590 to fix. Anyone familiar with this issue? Or know if its an issue fix someone could do on their own. I am no mechanic but do a lot of my own maintenance and small mechanic jobs.

I took my Jeep in to the local shop I use (not the dealership, that's another story), and they were not able to duplicate the noise. The whistle noise does seem to be affected by temperature, as it does it much more frequently when it's colder. Unfortunately when I had my Jeep in for service it was hot outside (mid 90's). I'm going to wait until it gets cooler and take it back to see if they can duplicate the noise. They did say it's likely a vacuum leak in the brake booster. It's weird it only happens first thing in the morning, and only when the temperature is cooler. Maybe that makes sense to others, I don't know, I'm not very mechanically inclined .....

Of course it makes sense that it is only cooler when it makes the noise. When cooler, hoses and fluids will contract, and can make "space" for air to flow until heated up to temperature.

Did you take it in this winter after the weather cooled down?

Mine's doing it to. Of course I had to find this just after I was in for warranty work last week - again - I can't afford to keep dropping $100 every couple weeks because another warranty issue comes up. Two weeks ago I was in for an ABS module and pump, last week was the stupid oil cooler, now I have this whistle and my brakes are squealing too.. my whistle happens a few times a day, not just first thing, this Jeep just wants to kill me now...

Mine has always done it in cold weather. Living in Florida means it only happens maybe a dozen times a year. Took it to the dealer a few times and being so intermittent, they couldn't get it to do it. It is probably a seal in the vacuum system but it doesn't seem to bother anything. After 10 seconds of running, it stops. If anyone figures it out, and it doesn't cost a lot, I would get it fixed.

Okay, so I thought the noise would be more consistent and easy to reproduce in the winter (I live in Pennsylvania), but alas, that was me thinking logically.

The weird thing is, the noise seems to have disappeared as of late! Very odd ...

I don't think it self-repaired itself, I didn't buy that option :) . So I'm wondering how much the weather really plays a part in the whole thing. Perhaps it is a spring/fall issue, I don't know. All I know is the whistle has (temporarily?) disappeared, and I'm still able to stop.

So I guess I'll do what seems to make sense, and that is drink a bit of whiskey, ignore the problem, and wait and see if it returns ...

Same here @ShetlandHouse. I recently purchase my 2013 from Dallas, TX & brought it back to WV. When our temps dropped drastically within hours I experienced the same “teapot whistle”. After running a few minutes it would stop and not happen again until the next morning. Then it just stopped doing that... (Self-repaired )
We did go ahead and find & purchase an OEM brake booster which was difficult. There were/are 36 of them in the US and are on back order. Maybe FCA is rolling out a better quality part.
I never experienced a braking issue that I am aware of. Just the noise.
At this point we are going to wait and see also.
