I picked up a 1984 cj7 it has the 258 and I am having a problem with the carburetor there is a piece that attaches to the front of the carb and has a piston that the throttle pivot arm rests on and believe it is sticking so some of the time the idle reves up higher than normal and some times it drops off I believe it is called the sole vacuum solenoid what does it do and is it necessary can I remove it if not can it be replaced

yes can be replaced and sounds like its working well its made so when you are driving and let off the gas pedal. its made to not let idle just go from driving to a idle it makes so don't drop idle so fast that your engine mite back fire.. you can adjust them if it dose not adjust then replace.
