Generally they have 40 channels. Channel 19 is the "trucker channel", channel 9 is supposed to be used for emergencies. Older radios had 23. I still have a Johnson 23 channel around somewhere. Some of the older Handie talkies could take up to 5 crystals (5 channels)... where is my Royce HT.. hmmm....

As far as old versus new there hasn't been many advances. Unless your a professional driver go with the least expensive CB you can find. They can be damaged by transmitting without an antenna or into an antenna that isn't resonant so you may want to shy away from used ones. When you get an antenna find someone with an SWR meter to be certain it's tuned best for the channels you'll be using the most.

that 9/19 switch is just for quick access to the channel, that radio has 40 channels
