Cheap spare tire?

1779 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  atikovi
I managed to puncture two tires in the span of two months, the last one unrepairable, which leaves me with no spare. My tires are 30x9.5R15 and they're expensive to replace. Because I plan to sell my TJ in a couple of months I really don't want to sink much more money into it. So I'm looking for a cheap spare tire.

The minimum size on the spec sheet is 215x75R15. Looking at Discount Tire I see a Nexen N Priz AH5 for $54.

I've never owned a Nexen tire. To just be a spare tire, is that a good choice?

Obviously the size difference could be an issue if I manage to bust yet another tire, but I guess in that case I'd just use the spare until I can buy ... sigh ... a full-size replacement.

Walmart has cheap tires and will patch them, or you can get a 30x9.5 KO2 for just under 150.. don’t know how cheap you are looking for. . Might want to try your local tire shop: allot of the times when trucks or SUVs get new tires they leave decent used ones you could pick from

Agree, go look for used. You don't need 100% tread.

The LT235/75R15 tire is about 29" tall, the 30x9.5R15 is 29.6" tall.

Of course you do realize if you sell privately, that an informed buyer will discount the price they are willing to pay for the Jeep with a spare tire that does not match the others.
Nexen makes very good tires. I had a set of their MT tires on my GF's Jeep.

^^ This, since you are selling the jeep in a few months and its the spare and doesn't need to match the tires on the ground.

Unless all tires are brand new with the tire hairs (aka vent spews] still intact, an "informed buyer" won't place any value on the tires whether or not they match.

The cost of a set of tires is always factored into the price I am willing to pay.

That's how I look at it as well. The tires are about due for replacement, I just don't want to sink $700-$1000 doing it when I know the sale price won't go up a penny if I do.

Certainly a reseller can bring up the age of the tires or mismatching spare as a negotiating point, but that's just life. I'm not expecting to make a mint off the car. Just around KBB.

Thanks for the suggestions. The guys who inspected my tire told me they don't sell used tires and I should go to the "seedier part of town" to find them ... funny how things change. When I was a kid everyone bought used tires and retreads.

Thought this was funny, when I was barley driving I could go to any tire shop around the corner and grabbed a 80% tread life used tire for nearly the price of a tank of gas. Now every time I go unless I go to a shop that I saw replace a set of tires spontaneously makes used tires vanish into dust

Doubt that the average vehicle buyer really cares about one mismatched tire as a spare. Go buy a used tire or the cheapest new in the size you need. If you care about looks then get a cheap tire cover for the spare.

I had an unreparable tire once and put a tube in it and used it as a spare. Cost, under 15.00 and did it my self. Its not hard to dismount a tire and cut the valve off, you only need to dismount one side to install the tube.
