Got an 83 CJ7 with 350 SBC engine. Whoever did the swap never upgraded the trans - stock T4 (also with Dana 300 Transfer Case). Found out the hard way about a month ago when I shredded 3rd gear. Decided to at least rebuild T4 to get me around while I decide on a heavy duty transmission.

Looking at my options seems best may be to go with a Ford NP435. Would need an adapter for t-case and likely new drive shafts to account for length difference on the adapter.

Not really going to wheel with this thing - just get around town on weekends, etc.

Any other ideas?

IIRC ford and Dodge used the NP435 while chevy used the Muncie 465. The 435 came with 2 different granny ratios. The 435 L or E comes with a 655:1 granny and the A and D version were something like 470:1 granny. Novac and Advanced have lots of info on particulars and fitment to various engines and TC's. I once would not own a automatic. Although both my 4x4 are manuals, Id much enjoy not shifting and using 3 feet to wheel.

Yeah Muncie would be another choice. Didnt realize it was compatible with Dana 300 TC. Thanks for the suggestion.

Most of your adapter available for the Dana 300 transfer case will make it a direct swap without the need to change driveshaft lengths. I think I recall the sr4, T4 and T5 transmissions being 15 1/8" long. I believe you can get adapters that make the four speed of your choice that exact length from Novak and Advance Adapters. I've got a T19 in my 84 and it didn't require any drive shaft mods.

Put another T5 in it and drive it nicely for now.

If you swap in a SM465 or any other manual transmission you will most likely have to change your trnasmission mount, may have to modify your transmission tunnel (the sm465 is very tall) i have one in my CJ7, you may also have to change your linkage for your clutch to work with the fork lever. If the length of the new trans/t-case you wanna use is different than what you want to run then you may have to get your driveshafts modified. Also if you step up to a bigger t-case then it may have larger yokes for bigger u-joints.

If you are just driving this thing around town, keep it simple. T4's are super cheap. You could probably buy 10 of them what it would cost you to change out your drive train.

My thoughts

Edit: They also stopped making sm465's in the 80's so parts now are actually starting to get expensive for them. You can pick them up for cheap though. I just traded a pack of beer for an extra one.
