Hey All,

These questions go out to all of you who have a 1950's CJ with the mechanical fuel pump with the vacuum pump and F head engine.

1) Is there an easy way to prime this system? I ran new rubber line and filter, put the line in a gas can (placed higher than the pump), and no fuel is getting to the carb. Its a brand new omix-ada fuel pump and filter.

2) How and where do the vacuum lines get run? I know where the wiper vacuum line goes, but where does the other run to?

Thanks
Sam

I don't have one that old, but you might try using a hand vacuum pump (like for bleeding brakes) to prime it, disconnect at the carb and draw the gas from the tank through the pump up to the carb. I have heard some fuel pumps can be damaged running them dry trying to get them primed.

Are you getting fuel at the pump showing it has drawn fuel that far? Just replaced the fuel lines on our CJ and used the hand pump. Hooked the line back to the carb and cranked a couple seconds and she fired right up.

This page might give you some more info on the vacuum lines and the F head engine.

Thanks for the input deanp. Turns out the fuel line was too long. sortened by 2 feet and she fired right up. Now I just need to fix the stalling while at cruising speed.
