Eh this jeep is falling apart on me this week.... I ahve bein gettina a clank sound and feel a vibration everytime my jeep turns ... just started after sitting for a few days...... I have a 99 with a 4.0 automatic

go outside with a friend and start the jeep up in the driveway or where ever its parked. Have your buddy climb in and turn the wheel back and forth. You climb under the jeep and look at the trac bar and everything to see how its moving. Grab the trac bar while he is turning it to see if you can feel it clank or anything. Look at the tie-rod ends and see if they are loose or anything. That would be the way to start.

more info on the jeep is needed.

if you are running wider tires on stock rims, its probably the tire side lugs catching the lower control arm, nothing to worry about really, just be aware of it and dont steer to full lock...

but we need more info on the suspension / tires / any mods to either ....

You can also jack up the front end so that the wheels are off the ground, then grab the tire and see if you can move it. See if it wiggles at all.

I have had better luck not getting run over when the jeep is off. :flipoff:

My jeep is lifted and I have 33 inch tires .... the clanking sound and vibration feel to be comming from the back .... my friend thinks it could be something with the springs...that possible?

tomarrow I will go out n try everything your sayin

shit is too hard to diagnose over the internet. drive down the Virginia and ill take a look at it for you :D

EDIT: if it is coming from the rear and only happens when you are turning, might think about popping the diff cover and taking a look at the spider gears.

and to rule out the obvious, do you have a locker in the rear?

no locker...... I looked everything in the front and tried wwhat azTJ said to try and it all seems normal ..... Im almost certain its coming from the rear differential.... would that be an easy fix if it was coming from there?

'easy' is relative to your comfot level when wrenching on your jeep. depending on what the problem is, though, it shouldnt be too difficult ... although nothing in the diff is cheap :(

pop the cover on the rear diff and see what is going on. im betting on spider / side gears seeing as you said it only happens when turning.

What should I look for?

Im a complete noob when it comes to my jeep besides changing fluids.... need to start learning eventually

everything should be tight and clean. no chunks of metal, metal shavings (fluid shouldnt look like glitter). all of the gears should have very little 'play' in them. look for wear marks, galling, pitting, and a blue hur to any of the gears. (if they have turned blue or rainbow colored, you have major heat issues.) the best thing to do is make notes of anything you see that just looks weird / out of place, take some pictures if you have a digital camera and post both on here.

the spider / side gears i am talking about are located inside the differential carrier (they allow the tires to spin at different rates when you are turning left or right. which is why i think it may be side / spider gears seeing as it has noise when turning.)

i highlighted the spider gears / side gears with a red box here:


rip it open and tell us what you find.

im going to try this tomarrow.... I need to pick up some fluid to replace back in there before I do this though so would this not be good to drive on to autozone?

yes, you will need the proper fluid to refill the diff after you pop the cover (if the old is clean and relatively new, you can put it back into the diff, but i would just go ahead and put in new fluid). you will also need a diff gasket or a tube of RTV Gasket Maker (i have had the best luck with Permatex Ultra Grey).

Drain and remove:
loosen the bolts on the diff cover
put your catch pan under the diff
remove the bottom half of the bolts (leave the top half in but slightly loose)
pry the bottom of the diff cover off so you can drain the fluid (this can be a pain in the ass, a nice sharp flat headed screwdriver can be used as a pry bar with light taps from a hammer)
pull the remaining bolts and remove the cover from the housing

fill and install (with RTV):
clean the mating surface on the housing and the diff cover of all RTV (wire wheel on a grinder makes quick work of this)
apply a constant 1/4" bead of RTV around the housing (or on the diff cover, personal preference really .... be sure to seal completely around the bolt holes)
wait for 1-2 minutes to let the RTV set up, wait no more than 5!!!!
apply the cover with bolts onto the housing
snug bolts in a criss-cross pattern
tighten all bolts (~35 Ft Lbs)
let RTV setup for an hour (recommended, i say forget it and fill the diff right away )
remove fill plug, fill diff with fluid, go wheelin

fill and install with gasket:
clean the mating surface of housing and cover
install gasket, cover, and bolts
snug all bolts
tighten all bolts (~35 Ft Lbs)
remove fill plug, fill, and go wheelin

using a gasket does take less time, but the regular gaskets you get from an auto store are paper gaskets so they are more of a controlled leak than a true gasket. RTV is harder to remove and takes a little more time but seals better.

pros and Cons to both, i suggest a LubeLocker or equivelent gasket as you get the best of both and none of the drawbacks.

i cant say becuase i dont know what is wrong. but it douesnt sound like you have much of a choice ... personally, if it was me in your situation, i would have a friend drive me there to get supplies so i didnt risk damaging the jeep anymore / endangering someone else on the road

but if the AutoZone was 1 mile from my house, id drive the jeep

its a tough call becuase we dont know what is wrong ...

you know how bad it is, i dont. if you have been driving on it without problems, then i dont see why not. it is your call.
